Thanks @melynda! I feel like I have what I need to resolve it but don't know which thing(s) to use because I don't know why her system is all out of whack. I keep thinking she maybe has a bacterial overgrowth from the Baytril but don't know for sure. Urgh.
I'm sorry but our knowledge about gp health issues are very small. The only thing we can do is wish u and your piggies all the best. Go Lil penny go!!!!!
If the poop smells terrible it may be a giardia infection -- that produces the WORST smelling poop in the universe. The treatment is flagyl, and I don't see that in your list of medications. I'd ask for some of that and see if it helps.
Thanks @bpatters! Penny's poop looks black and shiny but if I touch it it collapses into green goo and then smells bad, it doesn't particularly smell otherwise. In an email her vet did mention giardia being a possibility but unlikely. How would she have gotten that, doesn't it come from contaminated water? Can it come from raw veggies?
If it's green and smelly, it may be her cecal poops -- they're pretty fragrant too, but since they usually eat them, it's not so noticeable. Try offering her a bit of one to eat and see if she'll take it.
A giardia infection comes from ingesting giardia, and I assume it could be gotten from vegetables. But it's really rare in animals that don't go outside.
She's eating most of her poops before I ever see them. She's never been outside and not in a carrier (since she was found in DC in Jan). I'm more inclined to think clostridium from when she was on doxy and Baytril but the first symptoms were not eating and consequently not pooping. Her vet did give her cisapride and that's when the mushy poop started and it has never resolved. I will say her poop is more poop shaped today and not as long and stringy. She was eating a bit of critical care from her food dish earlier, do you think I should put her back on pellets? She has the Oxbow alfalfa pellets since she's 4-5 months old but I also have KMS Timothy pellets if those would be better.
Sigh, Penny's poop is softer again today. It's almost diaharrea but not quite. It's lighter green today. I just emailed her vet who is on leave until the 9th. Poor girl is on orchard and bluegrass hay, water and some critical care (she's eating plenty of hay so I put the critical care in her food dish and she nibbles at it). I've read everything I can find on gunuealynx and if I had flagyl I'd try it but I don't have any. @bpatters or anyone, I'm open to all suggestions at this point!
Good news, Penny has an appointment with a vet from the guinea lynx list this afternoon, I'll let you know what she says (the vet, not Penny, Penny is wheeking like a crazy thing for veggies, poor girl).
Thanks for the support and the well wishes everyone! Penny actually ate her critical care without a major battle tonight and her poop already looks better after the first dose of antibiotics and higher dose of benebac. I am hopeful!
I'm doing a happy dance (mentally, my back isn't up to the physical dancing). Penny just ate 12ccs of critical care (vet said to giver her 9-15ccs 2-3 x per day even though she's eating a lot of hay and some pellets)! And she likes Timothy hay again. And her poops are firmer and don't smell nearly as bad s they did. Go Penny!
