And the saga continues, I'm kind of at my wits end with Penny's poop issues. I'm hoping someone has some advice? So Penny went from not eating hay or pooping and needing to be fed critical care to now eating hay again and having very mushy poop. She's been separated from Ferb for almost 2 weeks now and I really want to get her better and have them live together again. She actually stayed with the exotics vet for almost a week because she wasn't eating or pooping enough and I couldn't stay home from work to feed her critical care every few hours, so she went to the vet for 24 hour care for 7 days. It turned out to be good timing because something in my back popped and it turns out I have a herniated disc and had to go to the ER from the pain and couldn't move for several days.
Anyway, I picked Penny up from the vet on Tuesday and that night she had almost diaharria (it wasn't quite but it was close). Of course the vet was going out of town for a week so I e-mailed her. She said to take her off pellets (she was already off veggies) and see if that helped, also to keep giving her BeneBac. The other thing Penny was doing was drinking insane amounts of water for her size. She's 660g and she was averaging a cup of water in 8 hours.
She is eating plenty of hay but will only eat bluegrass and won't eat timothy. I can't get a handle on what's causing the problem? Her poop is like pudding, and very dark green and smells horrible. Today for the first time since I got her back from the vet she is no longer drinking excessive quantities of water. I did feed her 10ml of critical care tonight because she had been eating the bluegrass hay all day but still acting hungry. I also gave her BeneBac. She's not bloated, she may be gassy because I heard what sounded like stomach burbling noises and farting (if piggies fart?).
I have a plethora of medications available, the vet mentioned giving her cisapride (which she gave me) but I can't figure out how that would help with firming up her poop, it seems like it would have the opposite effect based on what I've read? I also have a bunch of different antibiotics (Doxy, SMZ-TMP, Chloremphanicol, Baytril) but Baytril started this whole mess to begin with so I'm hesitant to give her any antibiotics. And I have baby simethicone on hand too.
Please let me know if you have any ideas!!! She's acting normal and wheeking for veggies and running zoomies in the medical cage. I'd put her back with Ferb but she keeps smearing poop everywhere and I keep having to clean her and the cage and I don't want poop all over Ferb and the 2x4 c&c as well (plus I'm going to have to do proper intros again).
