Re: Scratching piggie

He could have mites, which are microscopic in size, and which burrow into the skin. They can't be seen. If the pig weighs more than 340 grams, you can treat yourself with ivermectin. If not, you'll have to get kitten Revolution from the vet.

What is this pig's name? I'll rename this thread, and it can be his medical thread. You get one thread per pig. Please keep all posts to that thread, since it makes it much easier for people to try to help you if they don't have to chase all over the forum looking for information you've posted in other threads.

Re: Scratching piggie

Ever since I adopted my 2 girls, one of them was always scratching. I took them to the vet for a check up and he didn't seem to think anything of it. Could it just be a thing she does, especially since the piggy I adopted with her doesn't scratch? I figured they would be easily transferred from pig to pig. Bpatters, can you advise?

Re: Scratching piggie

There's no need for a transfer. Every living thing has mites, millions of them, including you and me. Something causes a pig to be susceptible to an infestation, and the mites multiply. A cage mate may or may not catch them.

If I had a pig that was always scratching, I'd treat it with ivermectin.

Re: Scratching piggie

Can you post a picture? It's most likely a hay poke, and those are very painful. If that's what it is, your pig needs antibiotic eye medicine and something for pain.

Can you gently move the eyelids up/down and see if you can see any injury to the eye?
