when you clean your cage do you use soap and water, or 1/2 viniger and 1/2 water, or do you buy that cleaning stuff that they sell at pet shops? Which is best?

I use the cleaning stuff from the pet shop, as it seems to be safe for Guinea Pigs and does a good job cleaning o_O

does that stuff help with odor too? I read on this site that viniger helps break down the urine.

CaliGirl is correct. Vinegar is an acid, urine contains ammonia and therefore is a base. Plus, vinegar is not toxic to guinea pigs. God only knows what they put in the cleaning solution.

I don't trust any cleaning solution from a petstore. Dump that crap and use the vinegar and water. It works quite well for me.

Cage Cleaning

I had read to use baby wipes, I use them and they work pretty good.

I put newspaper first in my cage. Then I use a half a box of baking soda on the paper, then I put down plenty of bedding then the hay. Between 1 to 2 inches. There is hardly no odor at all when I dump it for cleaning. Baking Soda definately works very well.

baby wipes

I'm interested in that baby wipes idea. Cavyspirit, any potential hazards or disadvantages there?

I would make sure they are the non-scented kind, just to be safe. =)

Baby wipes certainl wouldn't sanitize the cage. It needs to be disinfected.

I'm a soap and water person. Vinegar and water would be okay also.

I personally wouldn't use any cleaners or disinfectants...... I hate chemicals.

Well, I use the fresh'n clean antibacterial moist towelettes which are actually quite affective. Since they kill germs and do a great job at cleaning. They only cost $1.69 as well. I think they are a good choice, though if anyone finds out anything different, I am willing to listen. :)

I use vinager and water, it works just fine for me. (And it is posted on the "cleaning the cage page" https://guineapigcages.com/cleaning.htm) I don't think any baby wipes would disinfect, but maybe they could be used just to wipe away stuff. Then disinfest with something else. But I have used different cleaners in the past.

Vinegar and water here. Safe, deodorizes, sanitizes, cheap!

I use vinegar and water too, but I think I dilute my vinegar more than I should. I've never been good with all that 3 parts so and so and 7 parts so and so so I just took the vinegar we had left (about 3/4 inch high in a Windex bottle) and filled the rest with water. But it works great :)

Has anyone used tongs to clean up the wet/messy spots in their cage? I used them the other day instead of the kitty-litter scoop the pet store said to use, and it did such a good job, I have to buy a new one for the kitchen! It picks up just the right amount!

I work in a restaurant and got a pair of tongs for just that reason. I find that it picks up less clean litter and allows you to just pick up the soiled spots and poops alot easier than a scoop.

I would never use cider vinegar by the way. I used it once and it smelled for hours. The white vinegar though seems to smell less.
