I have two guinea pig that I have had for two weeks. I got them from a shelter near me so I don't know how it would happen but one of them seems rather pear shaped and firm from underneath her belly. The one that I am wondering about is really skidish so I have only picked her up once. the other piggie doesn't seem to mind me petting her to much, but over the last day or two she won't let me touch her.

Re: Not sure

I would call the shelter you got her from and ask when she came in there, and ask if she could have been with any males during that time she was there.
It is very possible she is pregnant, but I have seen some girls just have a pear figure.
Weighing her will be the best option, but deff see if the shelter can give you a date.

You mentioned something about weighing them- I actually use a baby/ small pet scale and it works great! I had the same problem with my older small kitchen scale and it would scare my boys. I have heard of people using fairly nice kitchen scales, though. Hope other people reply for you!
Good luck!

You could try getting her to walk into a tunnel or cuddle sack then pick that up with her in it. Works for my boys when they don't want to be picked up.

I just walked in and she was sleeping, so I tried petting her on top, and she was fine with that but then I tried to pet her side and she freaked out.

Mine does that too. ((The one that I just rescued that may be preggers)) She has the same kind of shape too.

The only time that I can ((and will even try to)) get her out of the cage is when she goes into her tunnel and I lift her out with it.

She looks like a normal shaped pig. Really doesn't appear to be pear shaped to me. Maybe you're just feeling paranoid?

Most guinea pigs don't like being touched on the sides, pregnant or not. The best way to find out if she's pregnant is to call the shelter and ask if she was housed with any males and to keep track of her weight. All the best for your piggy!

I contacted the shelter the other day and they said that there is no way that she could be with a male, but I know that not to long ago the pair was returned to the shelter. So I don't know that maybe the people that returned them to the shelter may have had her with a boy? When can you tell that a guinea pig is preggo? Oh and should I weigh her daily or just weekly?

Hello, just wanted to ask for some advice from all my fellow cavy lovers.
A few months ago I adopted a male piggy and we LOVE LOVE LOVE him!!! Best pet I have ever had and so great with my kids. I read that guinea pigs live happier lives in pairs so we adopted a second male guinea pig a month later. As it turns put, Patrick is really Patricia and what I feared was a swollen belly quickly turned into a pregnancy. It has been 10 weeks as of a week ago (so 11 weeks today) that I introduced them. I was expecting her to give birth last week but nothing yet. She is now wider than she is longer and she is not moving much. She has made a spot for herself between the water, hay and pellets and doesn’t want to move unless I encourage her to move to the other side of the cage with some veggies. She even sits in her urine so I am changing her bedding in that area daily. She seems to be eating and drinking a lot so I am not too concerned about that and I have doubled her Vitamin C intake and have added alfalfa hay to her diet as well. I can see the babies moving so I know they are alive. I am just so scared that she is overdue now and that she might not be able to deliver the babies, maybe they are too big. She was only a month old when I adopted her so she isn’t old (I read about the hips fusing in older piggies). Normally I take my animals to the vet but I don’t have an affordable exotic pet vet in my area and I don’t want to move her unnecessarily because she seems very tired. Any advice, am I just jumping the gun and rushing her along cause I am excited to be a guinea grandma J All words of wisdom are appreciated. I know many of you have gone through guinea pregnancies and as it was completely not my intention to breed her, I am trying to educate myself as best as possible. I’m just praying for the best outcome here. Thank you!

Since she is a newbie, she most likely isn't sure how to start a thread.

@Amber08844, to start a thread go the main Forum page, go down and click onto a discussion forum that relates to what you want to ask about.
At the top left on that page it will say 'Start a thread'. :)

This may not be related to dulce(the one I suspect is pregnant) being pregnant, but I noticed this morning that she is making a weird sound. It is close to teeth chattering(but I don't think it is). I was wondering if anybody could tell me what the sound means?

It's not difficult to figure out how to create a new thread on any forum.
However, since there seems to be an increase and users who find it difficult, I'd create a tutorial or *read me* thread for new users showing them the basics of the forum.

I agree it's not too difficult learning the basics on this forum, but for some people they may need a few pointers to learn everything faster. This is my first forum, so I really have nothing to compare it to. Good to know that most are set up this way! :)

update: Dulce(the possible pregnant one) is looking bigger, and even my mom commented that she does look bigger. I weighed her last week and this week(I have only had them 3 weeks and didn't have a scale the first week) and last week she weighed just around 1kg and this week she weighed 1kg and 150g!(Oreo has not gained or lost any weight) I don't know a ton about piggies but that seems to be a HUGE weight change. she seems to be a lot lazier than when I got her too, she just seems to lay there and eat(she does get up when i bring in veggies and to get water). She also seems to be alot more sensitive about me touching her sides.

I don't know if this is part of pregnancy in piggies or not. When i first got them(3 weeks ago) Oreo would let me pick her up and pet her, but Dulce would run away. then about a week ago they seemed to switch behaviors and Dulce would let me pick her up and pet her, and Oreo would run away if I tried to pet her. Now both of them seem really skiddish and have started fighting(rumble strutting, growling, teeth chattering) and other than once when I first got them I have not seem any of this behavior until Thursday of Friday of this week.

Hoping somebody can help?

Thanks
