I would like to build a new cage for my guinea pigs. Something nicer and more sturdy. Thinking of building it out of wood. What is your opinion on this?

Based on your plan, that's less than 10 sq.ft per level. It's much too small for multiple pigs. Since you are planning to build from wood, I'd recommend waiting until you know how many of each gender of pigs you'll have.

Well I so far have 2 females and one male.
It's going to be a L shape on top and bottom.

Arn't you waiting to see if your females have babies?
Wood cages are harder to make changes to.

I would wait until you know how many of each gender there are. Example: As 3 males need more space than 2. So if you build it now thinking of 2 males and there turn out to be 3 it will be too small

Instead of the side that's 3ft 5 inches(41 in), I can make that 4ft 5inches(53in) instead. Then make all the sides that are 2ft(24 in), I can make them 2ft 4 inches(28 in) And make the 3ft 2 in(38in) side into 4ft(48 in). Would that be better? I think that's the biggest I can make it for right now

You say the cage will be 2 feet 8 inches tall total, with the sides of each level being 1 foot, 2 inches. That leaves only a 4 inch opening between the two levels. How will you reach in the clean it? Would the sides be wooden too? With sides that high, there won't be much ventilation to the lower level.

That's not what i mean. There will be 18 to 20 inches between the 2 levels. That's what I meant but worded it wrong. Sorry. Yes the sides would be wood too. I'm thinking that I can also make the sides 12 inches high instead of 14 inches high

Yes I'm going to wait until they have the babies before I make it. I was just doing a rough draft and was looking for opinions on how big to make it. Let's say I end up with a total of 4 females and 4 males. I would be giving at least 2 babies away.

Just thought about it and if I move things in my room around, I'll be able to make the cage look like this or maybe even bigger.

Your plan will look more like this. For 5'10" back wall, it will be 15.8 sq.ft on each level.

If you change the back wall to 6'4", it will be 17 sq.ft. on each level.

Thank you for doing that. I didn't know how to do that. I also updated the sizes of each side since the first post. Would it be big enough for approx 4 pigs on each level? Because the average size for 4 pigs is 13 sq ft.

You're welcome.
Should be enough for 4 pigs. 13 sq.ft is the minimum for 4.

Ok thank you so much. Should I change the length of any side?

If it were me, I'd just make the whole thing a rectangle instead of an L shape since it's only 10" different.

This is the program I use.

I'm going to switch to fleece with U-haul pads once I have the new cage built. I want to know what I can I do or use so that the urine doesn't stain the wood?
