I don't live in Melbourne but around this season, it would be mostly lucerne because Barley season has passed.

Have you tried to call your local produce stores? They mostly sell in bales, though. Or you could grab a bag from Big W (Pasture hay, I think).

Southbank is inner melbourne so probably not too many produce stores around.

I know they sell bales of hay at the Mernda Markets every Monday. If you have a car it would be easiest...couldn't imagine lugging a bale of hay around on public transport.

It would be okay as opposed to no hay at all.

It's a hit and miss, but it's better than nothing at all as Linda said.

Considering that 15 ounces is 425 grams...no. I use the oxbow hay as a treat.

Just to give you an idea of how much hay that is it fits into a shoebox.

But the piggies do love it!

The pellets are a good buy if you can afford it, one bag last me 30 days if I feed 15 grams per pig per day.

haha sounds like I'll be using it as a treat too :p

ah ok! Maybe it is a good idea to mix the pellets with other foods?

No, don't mix the pellets, 15gram per day per pig is what was recommended on GuineaLynx. As long as you feed 1-2 cups of fresh veggies per day, and unlimited amounts of fresh, green hay you won't need anymore than that.

Remember, Hay-Veggies-Pellets, that's the order of importance.

Any hay is better than no hay. I just googled it, it seemed good. I never really come across that brand here in Brisbane. Although, I, for one, don't buy stuffs from pet shops who sells animals.

Do you have other friends in Melbourne that have guinea pigs that you could share a bale of hay with?

Just contacted the woman who sells the Oxbow hay on ebay, she's got 1.13kgs bags for $30 each, though they are yet to go up on the site. I'm seriously considering buying one...or two.

Woolies here in Tassie had hay for sale by the RSPCA down the pet isle. They also have guinea pig treats there. Our pigs weren't impressed with the treats, but they've gone NUTS for the hay.

It was a 1 kilo compressed bale of hay for 5.99 Not terrific price wise, but it was easier to get my hands on. ;)

Hi there,

I have also been having problems finding good hay. They hay sold at pet stores is very rough. Today though, I went to Woolworths (don't normally shop there). I noticed, as per previous post, that RSPCA have endorsed a brand from Peters which sells hay and Multigrain Rabbit and Guinea Pig food. My Guinea pigs have not been eating any of the hay that I have been buying for them but they loved this hay. It is much finer and softer and they ate all that I put in their cage. They also enjoyed the other guinea pig food. I will be buying my hay from there from now on as it is definitely the best I have been able to find. Hope this helps.
