Hello everyone:I bought a bale of hay from a farm co-op.It is horse hay which is supposed to be for guinea pigs.I found out later that it is alfalfa hay.Is this ok?I can't find timothy hay bales anywhere and the small bags cost $12.00 which only lasts me a few days.I live in Oshawa Ont.Thank's for any info.

You shouldn't feed the pigs alfalfa unless they are under 4 months old pregnant or lactating. If you do it can give them bladder stones and other stuff.

how old are the pigs? if they are less than a year old, buy some more timothy hay, and mix it in with the alfalfa.

If they are young, you can mix it with grass hay, but if they are adults it's not good for them. Grass hay is what they really need. Do a google search (or a froogle search-- (broken link removed)) and there should be a hay supplier online for you. If you want something local, try looking for a feed store or a pet food store that doesn't sell pets. Good luck!

lol im repeating myself but anyways dont get too much hay if you dont have lots of gps because it gets moldy and stuff after awhile. (even thought the price is better) i almost did that.

If stored properly, hay will last for a very long time without getting moldy.

"Hay can be stored for many months, depending on how fresh it is and if kept in the proper conditions (see some of the links below). It should be opened to breath when you get it. Keep it in a dry and well-ventilatednot in plastic. A wooden or cardboard box is ideal. If you get a bale or a partial bale, it will stay fresher longer if you break up the bale as little as possible. If you get a whole bale, try standing it on end, pop the strings, and use a section (or flake) at a time off the top. Just be careful as some bales expand more than others. If you get a shipment from APD or Oxbow, open the bag, leave the hay in the box, cut and remove the plastic." https://www.guineapigcages.com/hay.htm

Hello all: Thank's for all info. I got a giant bag of tim.hay at pet smart for $22.00 and mix it with the other stuff.I have hay bale in garbage bag but I'm going to put it in a big plastic storage box and keep it in the garage in winter. Here it gets below zero most of winter so I think it will be ok, right? I might us some on my rose bushes .Piggies have a new c&c cage and they love it! By for now.

Grass hay is the absoulte best for piggies!!

I buy my bag of timothy hay (it's a tall bag about a metre high, I forget what volume) at Petvalue supplies for $12 which lasts several weeks for me (3 pigs).

2.72 grams? Is that..a blade of grass? Lol

I'm not sure about Ontario but the stores in Winnipeg sell them. Now that I have the bag in front of me it says 2 kg (2000 grams) for $9.99.

I'm having a bad day today. That should have been 2.72 kg for $21.98 .That's a lot of money for a blade of grass! LOL I'll have to check out my local Pet Value .That's a big difference in price. What brand is it? Maybe they can order me some.

It says Straw Works Box 21 Burnkild Manitoba R0G 0E0. I guess that would be a local farm. They might still be able to order for you.

Pet Valu is pretty cheap.

Thank's guys. I'm going to check it out tomorrow.

alright! Good Luck pet krazy!! = D
