I'm not sure what you'd use to cover a ramp. Does your current pig use it? Many pigs don't use ramps and so upper levels aren't counted toward the space requirements.

they don't have it on there anymore, but is a big version of that..

The hutch in your link is only 48" W X 20" D X 19" H. It's very small.

If you are going to keep your pigs outside, keeping them in an insulated shed will be better. You will need to provide air conditioner on hot days though.

@lissie, I think that link was for a similar hutch but the one they purchased was bigger.

i understand but i am putting the hutch in a shed... my mum wo't let me do any different, and i need to find a cheap shed, i haven't got them at the new house yet, they are boarding at a sanctuary for now, as the constant moving would be too stressful, but i go and visit them everyday after school, so they are fine!

If you're getting a shed, why bother having the hutch at all? You can do something like that link.

I was reading above: Pigs are not to have sunlight on them? I was thinking of putting my cage in front of 2 windows as I have a bumpout.. Can someone verify this, and explain so I have better understanding. It is not direct sunlight, but it can get sunny?? Could I just lay a sheet or something over the top lid to block sun?

I think she means a greenhouse would meansunlight coming from all sides, so that would mean they would have like, no shade at all...

Ok.. i have a friend who bought that hutch in the link, not realizing how small it was,for her one piggie(his bff recently died) and now she wants to sell it, what would you pay for it maximum, she is thinking £120, i think that might be wishful thinking.. you??

I'd still won't keep them in the hutch. A secured shed will be much better to protect them from the weather.

This is what I'm talking about.

I understand, and i might sell mine and do that, but there is still the issue of finding a shed, i cannot afford the cheapest i have found at £200 it is too much.. would it be too much to ask you guys to help me look for a shed?? under like £60?

Can you return the hutch and keep money to spend on the shed?

I agree that you should return the hutch. You can look on websites like Gumtree for a cheap shed, the UK Craigslist, and even Freecycle too.

I doubt you'll get a good shed for free. If you can return the hutch, you can spend that money on getting a nice secure, insulated shed to use. You'll need an air conditioner in the summer, since they get heat stroke at temps above 85*F

@pigger123 British summers rarely get to that temperature, our hottest temps in the past few summers tops out around 25C, and it's 29C that's the heat stroke risk temperature. I keep a thermometer by my girls cage and the hottest I've had indoors is 21C!

Yeah, but I only payed £60 for it as it was on sale.. So I am better off selling it on eBay or something...that isn't enough to buy a shed..

If you're having a hard time finding affordable housing for them, what are your plans when you have unexpected, costly vet bills? A sick guinea pig can require vet care that far exceeds the cost of a shed.

i have a friend who is a small animal vet so she does everything for free except neutering and really expensive stuff(exceeding £1000 or something) not sure, but i am set up for vets, and my dad has agreed to pay for any excess charge vet wise, i just have to pay for everything else out of my money..

You need an exotic specialist vet for guinea pigs, small animal vets are not properly trained to treat them and will sometimes administer common medicines such as antibiotics that are fatal to pigs. Unless your friend is a trained exotic vet who has experience with guinea pigs, they won't be able to treat your pigs properly.

I'm not too experienced with sheds so I could be wrong, but don't they amplify heat? I don't know that that would be enough to push the temperature to heatstroke range, but it's something to think about.

To keep pigs in the shed, it has to be insulated, like a real house. Also needs air conditioning in the summer, and heater in the winter.
