We just adopted two girl guinea pigs and are trying to learn about them quickly. A trip to bed, bath and beyond got us three boxes of 14" grid after determining that the grid holes were too large at Target. Our boxes were $19 each. We also got two boot trays from BB&B for $7.99 each that have been great - they are 28" by 14" and fit perfectly into a 1 by 2 grid section. We got four canvas storage boxes for under the cage.
We have a boot tray in the loft and in the kitchen area under the loft. We build a sturdy ramp up to the loft, but only one of the pigs will go up the ramp. The kitchen has been moved to the main floor, but they also seem to pee there (and poop everywhere). With a puppy pad on the boot tray, we just replace it each day. It is quite messy with the food and pee in the same area. Does anyone know if a corner litter box will work? With the boot trays, so far we do not seem to need the coroplast. I put cardboard over the grids, then a doubled shower curtain liner folded about four inches up the sides with binder clips holding the shower curtain and fleece onto the grids. The boot trays are over the fleece for the kitchen and loft. The cage is 2 by 4 grids with a 1 by 2 loft. A little more than 10 square feet.
I picked up a small dust pan and brush at Walmart for fleece cleaning (3 times a day at least - messier than we expected!). I also picked up a small puppy bed. The guinea pigs hang out in the living room on the puppy bed and don't try to escape. very sweet.
