Large Cage Size = ?

I am thinking of building a 5 x 3 C&C cage because I already own the cubes and connectors needed to make something of this size. I'm not sure where on earth I'm going to get enough coroplast from, but I figure I could buy a couple of large peices and work it out. Now, my question is, how many pigs can I house in a cage that size? I would never get more pigs than I can handle (A local breeder owns 65 pigs and sends babies she can't find homes for to the pet store), but as we all know, they're irresistable - and since my pigs' cagemate died recently, I'm thinking of getting another boar or two.

First thing, don't get any pigs from breeders or pet stores. Always adopt a homeless pig, that way you are not contributing to the overpopulation.

You can comfortably fit about six sows or five boars in a 5x3 cage.

That's slightly less than a 2x8 which is what I have. You could probably fit 6 sows without arguments over space but to give them room for all their houses and toys I'd try 5. If it looks like you have plenty of room you could add another.

Alot of those pigs coming from the breeder and petshop are probably ending up in local shelters. Alot of people buy cute little baby pigs from the petstore, find out how much work they are or end up with a male and female, and then dump them or their babies. You should try checking if there are any of these homeless pigs first.

Okay, here is the issue: MY MUM SIMPLY WON'T LISTEN. She's convinced that the cage we currently own is big enough. It's about 6 foot squared on the inside. How can I convince her that they NEED a bigger cage?

Get her to look around on the site. Just be like mom, come see all these cages that people made. And all the great things they have to say about them. If you have the cubes and stuff, you could always pay for the coro yourself (if possible) and explain to her that you'd like to have this bigger cage, so even if she's not convinced the pigs need it, ask her as a favour to you. How many pigs do you own? Maybe you could downsize your cage idea. Maybe your mom is afraid of this 'huge' (in her eyes anyways) will take up too much space.

Why do peoples parents not listen when their kids say this is what they need for their pet? Just LOOKING at a pig in a petstore cage should make anyone sick... it's like saying here is a closit, you will live in here forever and I will let you run around for an hour every day. Aren't I nice?

Is that really big enough?

PS, Carys, you need to bear in mind that you will need extra cage space if they fight too much to housed together at some point. just a thought to bear in mind if your Mum is already unhappy about the idea of a bigger cage. Of course, with a C&C you can always build up pretty easily.

I had 6 boars living in harmony in a 3x4 with a 1x4 deck. Yes a 3x5 is big enough.
