I remember reading on here that labor in guinea pigs begins with a very loud hiccupping sound. My Meg is making that sound (she's the one I thnk is pregnant) I think. She's done it several times, but just stopped a few minutes ago. Are the babies on the way?

Update: 10:19 pm

Nothing yet, Meggie is eating some romain and chewing on hay. No more of the hiccupping sound and she's acting pretty normal. Hopefully it was a false alarm.

Last update for tonight, as I have to go to bed. Meggie is just chillin in the cage, eating a veggie here and there. The hiccupping noise stopped, I was thinking maybe she was coughing? Maybe she swallowed hay wrong or something... because she seems just fine. I let everyone know in the mrning!

I have never heard that labor in guinea pigs begins with a very loud hiccupping sound. Piggies will get normal hiccups from time to time just like humans do. They also tend to eat too fast and choke on their food and have to cough to get it back up.

Thanks Ly. I can't for the life of me find the post where I read the hiccupping thing. It might have been in the pregnant pictures post, but I don't see it now. Of course, I also don't remember who said it, so it could have been some noob offering up a guess...

Actually, I think I know what noise you're talking about. My Juliet made a strange noise when she went into labour with her babies. I always described it as a weird soft wheeking, but a hiccuping sound could be used to describe it. :)

Have you checked her pelvic bones for dilation? Is she lactating? Can you see the babies moving inside her? These things all usually happen within a few days of labour.

I can just about fit my pinky finger between her pelvic bones. She really appriciated that, let me tell you! I can't tell if she's lactating... Itried to milk her  but I'm not sure I was doing it right. Guess I wouldn't make a good baby Guinea pig. Every once in a while I can see a ripple against her side, but not like bouncing around in there.

Can you take a picture of her looking down over her from above so I can see her whole body?

Here you go Ly. I don't know if I got her from a great angle...to me she doesen't even look pregnant in the pic, but normally she looks like she swallowed a couple of golf balls.

I have a non-pregnant Aby that looks like she swallowed golf balls too, she is just pleasantly plump and definately not pregnant. She really doesn't look pregnant to me in that photo. When she looks like she has golf balls in her sides, is she sitting all hunched up?

No, it's when she's all stretched out... want me to get a pic of that?

Yes please, if you would.

Ok, one picture of a stretched out piggie on the way.

The best thing you could say to me is that you think she's just a fatty!

She honestly doesn't look pregnant to me. I can't say for sure if she is or isn't because only time will tell. How long have you had her again?

October 21st is the date that comes to mind... It was a Thursday, so I'm pretty sure thats the date.

Do you know her prior history? If she is pregnant, she's probably early on. Most pigs get very fat in the hind quarters and will look like a big pear.

If she is pregnant she's nowhere near giving birth. Some of mine are fatter than that and definitely not pregnant. She actually looks like she's in rather good shape compared to alot of pigs. I've got some pics of mine from above but I'm on the computer at school so I can't get to them.

I have sows that are not pregnant and fatter than that. I will see if I can get some comparison photos for you.

This is a picture of my sow one week before giving birth:

Is it time?!?

You can really tell she is pregnant in this picture.
