I have a 2x4 cage with a 2x2 loft and was thinking of making a cage stand when I move. I was wondering though if everyone likes having a stand? What are the pros and cons? I'm just thinking it might be harder to pick up my girls or clean the cage? I don't know... any thoughts would be awesome!

I have a 2x4 with grids under it. It's really easy to clean the cage now and I use the space under it for storage. Easier in every way.

Yes, it definitely is easier. However, make sure you know how you want to make it, and how big, and if you want the sides to flip down; think ALL of this through...otherwise you'll find yourself crying on the floor surrounded by 400 zip ties and a bent grid in your clutches.

@Amalee how do you get the sides to flip down??? And don't worry I'm definitely a planner so I'll go into it with a strategy :)

Just made a 3x5 with a 3x5 grid stand underneath. DEFINITELY think it through before making it!!! I had a million things going through my head when I was doing it but overall, it turned out well. We do have to reinforce it with PVC pipe because it is sagging in the middle (stand and cage) but other than that, it looks great. And for sure get a ton of zip ties. We ran out so we bought a 1,000 ct bag! lol

I have a 3x4 with 2 layers of grids for a stand. I think I would rather have had just one layer of grids, or no layer at all, because 2 layers is just a bit precarious for me. It is the perfect height for cleaning and great for storage, but for the cost I would rather have done just 1 layer.

Hope it helps! :)

I built a two grid tall stand for my 2x5 and it's fantastic! The stand is tall enough to not torque the hubby's back (he's 6'4") and it's tall enough to fit our dog crate, the box of hay, and pellets! I think it will also store our new fleece! I have the front three grids of the cage not connected with the plastic clips though. I zip tied every square along the bottom and I zip tied the three of them together to make a downward opening door. I keep the door secure with two small bulldog clips on both sides

Thanks everyone :) Now I definitely think I want a stand- it will just have to wait until I move in August!

I have a 2X5 with a grid base. I did the base first, and then built the cage attached to it. I love it, but am starting to wonder if I took out some of the grids that are on the base to make a loft if it would still be sturdy enough lol. I bought two boxes of grids, and had about 7 or so leftover when I was done. I used connectors and zip ties to make it sturdier

I bought 3 boxes of grids and built a 2 grid high stand, and I definitely have enough grids for a loft, and even a play pen!
It's awesome haha

I overlapped my grids on the sides and underside of the cage for extra stability so I didn't need an I-beam support. I found quite a few white storage grid containers at Goodwill that I attached to both of my cages to store my supplies. To support the cage, I have grids along the back, sides and middle underneath the cage. I left the front open so I can store things under there.

I love having my cage on a stand and I have to have one because my dog is crazy. I had grid stands for years but I definitely like having a wooden stand. It becomes a permanent piece of furniture and you can paint it to match your decor. If you have access to the tools or some help (and your not planning on expanding your cage a billion times) wooden stands are a good way to go. I do like grid stands for the simple fact I can make my cage whatever size I want very easily.

I have lumbar spinal stenosis and not having to bend over was well worth the money. The piggies are higher up so we don't seem like such giants to them. I f anyone has a lower back problem, do your stand two grids high.

We have a long folding table as a "stand" for our pig pen. Nice and sturdy, works great, and storage underneath.

I just made a grid stand last week and so far i like it. I did however, get extremely frustrated during the process but it turned out pretty sturdy. Mine is one grid high because I didn't have enough grids to make it two grids high, but it is a lot better to clean it than when it was on the floor. I have very bad knees, so when it was on the floor it just made my knees hurt. Plus, the extra storage space is wonderful for all their supplies!

This is so true!! LOL :D I did this with my first 3x5 C&C cage base I built.

I have a 3x4 on a 1 grid high stand. It has a flip top front and I love having it this way! Do you like your cage stand?Do you like your cage stand?

I have spondylolisthesis and L3 and L4 compression fractures so I definitely agree! Mine is only one grid high, but I'm 5'3 so I don't have to bend over too far.

This is pretty much why we built our stand too! My hubby is 6'4" and he'd have to just sit on the floor in order to do anything with the pigs. We build our stand two grids high, and then realized I was too short (5'1") to reach into it! That's why we made the front panel flip down so I can access the piggies too lol
