One of my piggies, Truffles, started making a strange noise yesterday. It sounds like a bullfrog croaking. It comes and goes. The only thing that I have done differently is feed them Wheatgrass for the first time yesterday morning. I noticed it yesterday afternoon. Has anyone ever heard this sound before? Could it be a URI? He is eating and drinking just fine and has no noticeable signs of drainage around his nose. Thanks in advance!

I took all of my piggies to the vet today. She said she couldn't find anything wrong with them and they looked very alert. They have also gained weight since I brought them to her a month ago. Whitman had been sneezing, in addition to Truffles making the froggy croaking noise, so she put them all, including Flash, on 10 days of antibiotics. I am just worried that I might be missing something. I read another thread from this forum that discussed a piggie having a heart condition and making strange noises. My vet is not a certified exotics vet, but she does see guinea pigs. Should I take him to another vet?

It could be the choking noise that some pigs make when they eat too fast. What antibiotic did the vet put them on?

Oh! Is that sound a bad sign? When I'm feeding my piggy veggies he makes a kind of "Cuch" sound, but he only does it for a second so I assumed it was just a normal guinea pig noise.

No, I think that sound is normal. I think that is just their chewing sound. The sound Truffles is making is when he breathes, not when he eats. Of course, he didn't make the sound while I was at the vet's office. It also sounds a lot like a small child when he has rattling breathing with a cold or asthma.

Our Sheldon has been making a weird noise that sounds like what your describing. We took him to the vet and she sat with him for 45 minutes but he wouldn't make the sound. It's like a teeth grinding/snuffling combo noise. He didn't make the sound for about 4 days after seeing the vet but just started it again. We are trying to catch it on video so we can send the recording to the vet, I'll also post it here if we can catch him doing it. He doesn't have any other problems, so it could be a comforting noise he makes now that he's settled in?

Thanks for the feedback Hhbean! I found this video on YouTube which sounds a lot like how Truffles sounds. He isn't making the high pitched sound, but the scratchy croaking sound is almost right on. I am so worried that he has a heart problem, but I also read under the video that he might have a piece of grass or hay stuck in his nose, which is making the noise. I did feed them wheatgrass the day it started for the first time. If he does have something stuck in his nose, how do I get it out? TIA!

Yes. That is what it sounds like. I am contemplating trying to get him in to see another vet that is about 30 miles away that, while not certified for exotics, is more specialized for small animals. I just don't know what to do. I don't want to spend a ton of money if it is something that can be cleared up with antibiotics, but I don't want to take a chance at him getting worse either!

OK, so I just called the vet that supposedly specializes in exotics. The receptionist said that they treat guinea pigs, but the only specialist is in Houston; about and hour and 1/2 away from me. The vet that I called can see me this afternoon, but I am not sure if it is too early since I just started him on antibiotics yesterday. After listening to the video, does anyone have any ideas! Thanks so much!

That is very close to the sound Sheldon makes! His lungs, heart and teeth were good, no runny/crusty eyes or nose. He doesn't make the noise all the time and it started about 2-3 weeks after he moved in with the other boys. He is running around like a happy piggy, eating, drinking, pooping and peeing is all normal. He wouldn't make the sound at the vet and it took about 4 days after the vet visit for him to do it again. He made the noise last night but stopped when Daniel tried to get a video with his phone.

Maybe you should send that video to your vet, and then they might be able to combine the symptoms with the sounds (cause of course no piggie is going to cooperate and do it when it's helpful :p)

I will, I'm hoping it's just a sound some piggies make. I looked at some threads about hooting and that isn't the same type of sound(thank goodness). My vet did say she has had other small animals that made a sort of noise that I described to her as a self soothing thing(please, please, please let that be the cause of this noise). She didn't want to put him on antibiotics because there were no other symptoms and the side effects aren't good if he doesn't really need them.

My Truffles coughed twice last night, then the noise seemed to get better for a little bit, but it came back. Hhbean, like your Sheldon, he doesn't do the hooting either. I just hope it is not a heart condition. That is what I have read about. I don't know when to make the decision to take him for more extensive tests because other than the noise, he seems just fine. Frustrating!

What timing... one of my pigs just started doing the same thing! My boar has been croaking so loudly at night that it was waking my SO up while she was sleeping. I hadn't heard it myself until this morning when he woke me up with it. He apparently does it only at night, and it is really loud (I am a heavy sleeper and it finally woke me up). It also ends with a strange cough.

I'm going to do some research and talk to some people at the rescue and see what they think and let you know what I come up with. One of my pigs recently had a URI, so it could be the case that he is sick, but the fact that he only does this at night makes me wonder if it isn't something else.
