Hi! I think Skittles may be pregnant. I got her about 3-4 weeks ago and she seems to be growing out. She is geting kinda pear shaped and progressively bigger everyday it seems. She was adopted from a family run pet store that someone had turned her in so I don't know complete history. My question is..... If she is pregnant and has babies, do I need to separate her from Skeeter? If I do have to separate, do I have to do the introduction process all over again? At what age do you have to separate the babies (males/females)?

There's an entire subforum on pregnancy and babies you may have missed that can answer your questions much better than I can. Here's a link. (broken link removed)

Skeeter is a female. I had brought her to the vet to make sure before we took in Skittles.

Blackarrow - Thanks for the link!

I wouldn't think you would need to separate a female? (but I'm not sure) Anyone else?

No you do not have to seperate the females. Skeeter will act like an aunt. Male babies have to be seperated at 3 weeks.

Thank you so much. That's what I was hoping. She's pretty little so I am hoping that she is ok. I wish I knew when she would have them. I just noticed the belly starting last week so I am figuring about 4 more weeks????

OK. So boys get separated from Mom at 3 weeks then. I have a 47x24 size cage to keep the boys in if she is pregnant until I can find homes for them. Thanks for all the info. Now I just wish I could predict when she would have them!

Do you know how she was kept when you got her and what date did you get her?

I got her 2 1/2 almost 3 weeks ago(?). She was dropped off at a small petstore near my house so not much information. I worked there as a teenager and they called me to see if I wanted to take her. She's pretty small, not sure of her age and they didn't know anything about her.

Mamas usually start to show around 6 weeks and pregnancy last for 44-72 days. She can have anywhere from 1-8 babies and they should be able to eat solid foods a few hours after being born. Mama will give birth to them and clean them herself, but any other female in the cage will help her with clean and stuff, so their kind of like an added bonus if you have them there. Babies to be separated at 21 days, but some boys may mature before that time so be careful as you may have to do it as early as 2 or 2 1/2 weeks instead of the 3. If you take her to the vet, which is best, they can tell you exactly if she is or isnt with a simple ultrasound. Good luck to you!

Males cannot do anything til 21 days at the earliest. I would not separate them beforehand. If they are rumblestrutting or anything, they are only practicing.

If you assume that she was about 3 weeks pregnant when you got her and you have had her 2 1/2 weeks then she is about 40days pregnant. If she gives birth at 62 days (about the earliest) she will be due in about 3 weeks so get preparing. Get yourself cavy savy vet ready and good luck!

OOH and keep us updated!

I've had to separate mine at earlier because they were mounting. It's not unheard of for them to start earlier.

I got a picture of Skittles today with her little belly. I'm pretty sure she is pregnant, her sides keep growing.
