I am thinking of getting a guinea pig for my 9 years old daughter for Christmas. I was looking at a cage that is 42 X 28 inches with a ramp to the 2nd level. Are cages without tops safe? Do guinea pigs ever get out of them. I definitely do not want it running around the house when we are not home. Also, is this cage big enough for 2 pigs?

An open cage is safe, but there is really no way to know if your new pigs will try to climb out until you get them home. Most pigs are not climbers though. A lid is very easy to make if you find you need one. The cage you're describing, if it's made of cube grids with a coroplast base like is promoted on this site, is equivalent to a 2X3 cage. If you are getting 2 pigs, which would be a good idea, you want to look at something 2X4 or 28X56 inches or larger.

I'm sure your intentions are wonderful, but since I don't know you or your daughter, I want to mention one more thing. Animals as gifts are generally discouraged for children as they typically get bored with things rather quickly. Make sure you are prepared to keep up with the feeding, cleaning and other care of the pigs if this should happen. Also, the lifespan of a well cared for guinea pig can be 5-8 years, and sometimes longer. It's a big commitment to take on.

Usually the only safety issue is something getting in to harm the pigs. Homes with cats, dogs, or younger children would do better with a top on the cage. While pigs can get out if they are really motivated very few pigs ever try. It's rarely heard of. In fact one of mine climbed 3 grids high to get back into her cage but never once has tried to leave it. The only escapes are generally males trying to get in with females or 1 very bored lonely pig who decides to go look for company.

Be sure to read through Guinea Lynx :: Guinea Pig Care Guide as well as the rest of this site before deciding on guinea pigs.
