after a month of adopting my dear girls, the playpen grids i ordered have still not arrived! there was a big hold up at the customs and for over two weeks i was not informed at all! while the little darlings were happy with new fleece bedding, i kept fretting over the size. finally yesterday i got a call and my cage parts should arrive by friday, hopefully.

this is the pet store cage their previous owners bought, which is too small for two adult females.

meantime i managed to find more of the cage parts in a large pet store far away (the others i checked didn't have them) and decided to buy an extra pack. i feel so silly, feeling like i could have just gotten it at that store much sooner and potentially save a little money too :( it isn't cheap at $35 usd for a pack of 8, and i might have to pay taxes :( )

so i started working on my new cage today, and hopefully can update soon with completed pics and pigs! :D

I had to have my coroplast shipped since i couldn't find them here, and they had to be cut up. so i taped them together that way for a nice effect. i'll never use regular bedding so i think the high 6 inch sides aren't necessary.

one panel is 34cm long, and it was too steep to have just one for a ramp. so my husband suggested i use the overturned hanging shelf basket thing i bought from a store and to attach two ramps to it :) the second floor is actually a solid painting canvas, which i thought would be more support than cage panels since it has a wooden frame. i'll secure it to the panels later.

the basket/shelf is covered with coroplast, fleece and one towel layer since i don't expect piggies to really pee on it. my husband pointed out its better to use that than the wooden houses they have, since they like to hide together if something loud or strange noises happen!

new home in progress!today i made the base with 4 plastic table mats taped securely together. they're not as tough as coroplast so it's mainly to protect the framed canvas under it.

annoyingly, i found out that my cage parts was delayed because the ebay seller DIDN'T WRITE MY NAME ON THE PACKAGE. Never in my 500+ online purchases have i encountered such a thing!

The cage so far is looking great! I hope all the parts come soon, so the pigs can have their new home! I really like how you have improvised to make the cage and it still looks fab! I really like your ramp idea :cheerful:
I'm looking forward to seeing the finished cage!

ETA: Stupid eBay seller! lol

thank you guys! i was reallly nervous about building this cage, many people have such awesomely large ones here and i really want the best i can do for my piggies :D
hopefully the parts arrive tomorrow, can't wait to finish and put in the new fleeces that arrived today too ! :D they're getting washed now so they wick

new home in progress!new home in progress!new home in progress!i spent 5 hours working on this cage today! not to mention i had to go to the DHL office to collect my package.
the second storey didn't work out so well because i felt it was not stable enough, so until i find a better idea it will just be a tiny fleece forest atop a hidey!

the hard work paid off when i put my girls into their new home, they were running around exploring immediately and one was happily popcorning for awhile! :D
too bad i was so tired i forgot to film it :(

It looks fantastic! Glad to hear the girls are enjoying it :)!

Yay! It looks amazing, I'm so glad it's done and your girls are happy! :)

thanks fellow piggy parents! :D
added one final touch today :Dnew home in progress!

You did a great job on your cage. No doubt about it, I'll bet there were in Piggie Heaven with a brand new large cage. Now sit back and enjoy all your hard work.

(broken link removed) this place has lots of cartoons of piggies and other animals :D you can order prints as postcards to use as signs, or *cough* take a printscreen *cough*.

i love their products though, and want to get the noisy guinea pig t shirt :D

Your alternative cage is really creative and I hope your pigs enjoy all the extra space! The cartoon guinea pigs are a nice touch!

Awesome cage!
