Diarrhea Diarrhea

I went to the vet and sais that her inner theaths are curved and its hurting her tounge. He trim the teaths but she is still not eating the hay and the pallet. But i'm not satified with the vet because he just check her mouth nothing else. I mean tammy, body, eyes ets.

This is called malocclusion. I just lost a guinea pig to this about 2 weeks ago. If she isn't eating then please go back to the vet for some Critical Care (the powder she was "trying to sell you"). She will need to be syringe fed. Also, she will likely have to have her teeth trimmed regularly for the rest of her life. It is extremely important that she have a constant supply of hay to eat. Not only because guinea pigs need it to keep their insides moving, but because it'll help grind her teeth down.

I don't want to alarm you, but pigs go downhill very fast. My pig died from this and I diligently syringe fed her and brought her to the vet twice in a week. I believe now that my pig had an undiagnosed heart condition that the vet thought was a respiratory infection so your pig may have a chance, but you need to take this very seriously.

I'm in New Orleans. There are two vets I would recommend but neither will be cheap.

Which vet did you take her to?

Nice to hear that one of my forum freind lives very near to me. Thanks for the details above.

I tried to multi quote but its not doing anything when I hit the MQ tab.

I'm so glade you concerns about my GP. Thanks a lot. I'll get it now.
But the reason not accepting it as the teck told me that this is because she was not eating earlier, but she was eating. I never knew the main purpose of it untill I talk to Dr. Rich who told me that she will not eat beacuse her cut in the mouth. Anyway I'm gonna call them and as them to get it ready. Thanks again. I hop my GP will get better..

I'm glad you're going back to the vet to get the Critical Care. I don't know if you could ask them to do this, but maybe a vet tech or Dr Rich could feed her the first time, and show you how to do it?

Now I understand why the old owner get rid of her so quickly. She may knew about her situation. I don't know how she is taking care of her and the other pets which she told me she had in her house. I see she is keeping her in a aquarium size around 12x24.
Anyway I'll do what I can do. But I honestly going to the vet twice a week will be a burdon on me as I cannot effort it as I'm jobless now. Hope you understand.

That makes sense. I'm very glad your poor guinea pig (what's her name?) has an owner that is taking good care of her. Hopefully she will get better quickly and not need any more vet visits for a while!

I also have been laid off but I took in these animals with the full intention of taking care of them to the best of my ability. Their needs haven't changed since I lost my job a little over a month ago. They still need good quality food and medical attention if they get sick, which one of my pigs did. It cost me over $200 to treat my Ethel and she still died. (a lot of that was medication for the respiratory infection that I now don't think she had) I was going to bring her in again the day that she died, but she was no longer with us when we woke up. Not to be harsh or rude, but if you can't take care of an animal, and that includes vet care when they're sick, then you shouldn't have them. It's not fair for them to suffer and slowly starving to death is suffering.

This is a serious medical condition and hopefully she'll pull through it and need minimal medical care for it in the future, but who knows how long it's been since she's eaten normally. I didn't realize that my pig wasn't eating normally because she was showing interest in food, but one day I picked her up and there wasn't as much of her there. You should be weighing her daily as well with a kitchen scale.

To get the multi quote feature to work you hit the "MQ" for each post you want to quote but on the last one you choose you have to hit the "Quote" button. That will open the window with all of the quotes in it. Then pare down what is in each quote to JUST what you are remarking on and type your replys.

This link has a tutorial where you can practice it if you want https://www.guineapigcages.com/forum/feedback-how-do-i/27420-meaning-multi-quote-message.html

Ariel. My daughter named her from her famous movie Little Mermaid.

That is great you got the Critical Care. I hope she gets better soon. You've done a great thing taking this little creature who was so sick. I hope you are rewarded by her getting better and being a joy in your life for a long time. Do keep us posted on her progress, OK?

I really hope that this is a result of her former owner not giving her hay and veggies and that this won't be a reoccurring problem for her. Best of luck to you and your little piggy. I do hope that you don't think that I was being mean to you because that wasn't at all my intention. I just wanted you to understand that this could potentially be very serious and if she didn't start eating, she may need to be seen again to make sure that the malocclusion wasn't a symptom of a bigger problem. It's a very good sign that she's eaten something since having her teeth trimmed.

I'm so pleased! I'm sure she will start feeling better soon. Please let us know how she is doing.

I understand. Thanks for your advise and concern.

Hello Guys,
Well I have started giving her the Criticle Care and she also like it. Last night she also started drinking water by herself and since morning she is also eating some veggi and fruits but still no hay and pallets at all. I got the patco brand hay, does the brand make any diffrence or shel I wait. And I just saw one little poop.
Thank You.

Please don't use salt licks as piggies do not need them and they can be dangerous to their health.

To help the teeth, you need to provide unlimited quantities of grass hay.

When you type things into word and then paste them into the reply window, it carries over the formatting from word as you have seen. You can highlight everything you typed and then hit the button in the upper left (remove text formatting button) and that may get rid of it or you can hit preview post and see if that shows the font and size tags. If it does then you can fix it before you post. If it does not fix it, then right after you hit submit and it posts, hit edit and remove the font and size tags yourself. Otherwise, myself or another mod has to come in behind and remove it all.

Also, please do not post one post after another in the same thread. You can multi-quote by hitting the MQ button on all posts you want to quote and then hit quote on the last one after hitting MQ. You also have 10 minutes in which to edit a post to add more info. I have merged you last 4 replies into one post.

If salt is dangerous then why then why these pet stores are able to sell it so easyly and freely. Is there any organisation to monitor their prouduct. Like humen medicine are controlled by FDA. And what should I give her for chewing. Please advise. Thanks.

In the bigginning I always wanted to have two GP as I have read that they like to have mat. And I also see all yours pictures and everyone have more then one. You all know the situation of my GP. So it will be a good idea to have another GP now or I should wait. And please also advise that what should I see before getting a new GP. Thanks.

Yes! The brand/quality of the hay makes all the difference. It needs to be a good quality fresh hay, very green and leafy (but dried of course).

You could try to find a farmer in your area that sells hay, I have heard horse quality is the kind ot look for when buying local. I personally use Kleenmamas Timothy hay and my guinea pigs love it. They go crazy, wheeking and running around, when I open the box and they eat it all day and night. And Kleenmamas is the only pellet I could get them to eat. Now they run for the bowl when I fill it, before they wouldn't eat the pellets.

Others like Sweetmeadow brand, and Oxbow occasionally has some good hay, but be picky with those as they can sit in the store for a long time and can sometimes be very dusty and old.

You can only get Kleenmamas hay & pellets online and they are a little pricey, and the shipping nearly doubles the price. As this might not be an option for you right now, then I suggest that you get local hay because that will be a lot cheaper and a whole bale will last you a long time.

With a guinea pig with malocclusion it is terribly important to get her to eat hay and to be chewing a lot to keep the teeth worn down, even with regular trimming. So if she doesn't like the hay you have right now, please go and find her some that she likes. She really needs to be eating hay much more than the pellets anyway.

Well, it is important for them to have a playmate, but given the current situation you might want to wait just a bit. You really need to get this one healthy and also you need to make sure that you are financially able to take them both to the vet if they need it. Your current piggy will need regular trips to the vet to get the teeth filed down.

You also need to consider the guinea pigs personality and you don't want to end up with one that will bully the one you already have, or keep her from eating. I have one that steals the food right out of the others mouth. And if this happens to your current pig, then she won't always get the nutrition that is so important to her health right now!

Plus for at least 3 weeks you have to have them in separate cages in separate rooms, for quarantine. This makes sure that if either of them are sick, they won't pass it to the other one. So if you are not prepared to do that, then now is not a good time to get another one. As long as you are spending lots of time with the one you have now, then she won't be too lonely.

Unfortunately pet stores sell a lot of things that are bad for guinea pigs, just as grocery stores sell a lot of products that are bad for humans. It's up to us as adults and caregivers to use our judgement and common sense. You wouldn't give your daughter a lot of sugary or fatty or junk food, but every store sells it.

I would try to get Oxbow hay - the best kind would probably be Western Timothy. The bag looks like this: Oxbow Animal Health | Western Timothy Hay
Also, the hay should look green, not brown, when you buy it. That means it's good quality and fresh. You can also buy hay in large quantities online (from a place like Kleenmama's Hayloft) and have it shipped to you. This is what I do. I pay about $70 for 6 months' worth of hay for my 2 pigs.

Hay is the best thing for guinea pigs to chew and eating lots of hay will help your pig's teeth wear down naturally. If she hasn't had a lot of hay from her previous owner, it might be why her teeth became overgrown. I would also recommend Fiddlesticks, like these:
(broken link removed)
They are pet-safe wooden logs that are joined together with wire. You can bend them into different shapes, like tunnels, and they like to chew on them. My guinea pigs love them!

How are you giving her the hay? My guinea pigs like it best when i put a big pile of hay in their cage. They eat more if they can play and hide in it. Maybe your Ariel would like that too?

I'm so glad it sounds like she is doing better!

Thanks for the advise. I'll keep in mind whenever I'm buying next time. And I'll wait to get on more untill my GP is perfectly sound and stable. Thanks again. :)

Hello Again,
Thanks, I'm putting that in a bowl. I think I should change the brand and see if she is eating.
