I live in a small apartment, and I'm currently trying to figure out the best place to put a cage. Essentially, I can have it in the corner of the room, but the lip of the wall on one side makes it impossible to have the cage be 2 full grids wide. I'd have to shorten the width by about 4 or 5 inches - so overlap the grids by 2, maybe 3, squares. This would allow me to have a cage that is 5 grids long.

However, I realized I can move my furniture around in a way that would let me have the cage be a full 2 grids wide, but only 4 grids long. My question is: which option is better?

Oh, and before I forget - this setup would ideally be housing two pigs. Thanks!

A 2x4 is sufficient for 2 guinea pigs. I wouldn't make it any narrower.

I agree with pinky. I'm currently trying to adopt another guinea pig (right now I have one) and the adoption organization won't let me get one if one story is not at least 2x4. They say it is perfect for them to run laps in the cage.

Width is better. Narrow cages, even by a few inches, are harder to rearrange hideys and such, and pigs cant run around as well. Go with a 2x4.

If you want to figure out which is larger, you could just find the area of both options by multiplying the length and the width to see exactly what the difference is between the two options.

One thing that confused me when I was figuring out the square footage was  I was figuring out square inches, and horrified by the number I was getting (somewhere in the thousands) sooooo long story short, once you figure out the square inches, divide that by 144 to get square feet

square feet is length times width. :3 so 2x4 is 8 square feet.

Most of the grids are 14 inches instead of a rounded foot, so I was adding it that way. Instead of thinking as 2.3 feet, I was thinking in 28 inches (for 2 grids) and then converting the area to feet.

This made me giggle! We're also in a small space, and ended up removing an entire couch from our lounge to accommodate our piggies.

This is not correct as grids are 14 inches not 12.

Wider is better. It gives the pigs more room to get away from each other if one is having a bad day. Boars especially do better with wider, shorter cages than long, skinny ones.

This is not correct as grids are 14 inches not 12.

i think the grids i currently use are 14 inches, but i had to overlap them slightly to make them fit to the floor of my cage. so i don't think the size of the grids affects sq ft if you are overlapping them.

i could be wrong though, sorry.
