Cage Mice! Please help!!

Okay, I'm freaking out, I have an older house and we've always had a small problem with mice, I haven't seen them in my piggies cage yet but the cage is on the floor (I didn't even occur to me about mice transmitting illness or disease or trying to get in the cage!!!) and I want to put the cage on a table in order to help stop the mice from trying to get in the cage, I know it won't stop them completely but I want to do what I can while trying to capture the mice. Does anyone have any ideas on how to keep mice away from my guinea pigs cage? Will a mouse pass on any disease or illnesses to them? Will the guinea pigs be safe on the table? (Are there any problems I'm not away of with guinea pigs being up high?) Please Help!
