Coroplast Alternatives Using just material/cloth instead of coroplast?

I want to make a cage. I will be using the grids. Instead of using coroplast all around the sides, can I just put cloth around? What's the difference? It's basically to keep all the hay and stuff in, right?
Is there a preference for one over the other?

You really need something waterproof, because no matter what you use for bedding, some moisture will reach the base. I have heard of some people using a vinyl shower curtain in place of coroplast and I think there are several youtube videos that describe/show doing this but I haven't tried it myself.
