Blackie, our 1 yo Texel piggy, has had loose stools/diarrhea on and off since Thursday. Vet visit on Friday lead to a wait and see (seemed to be getting better and was fed a new veggie on Wed), but we got a prescription for Baytril today (dropped from 700-650 grams in weight). I went to the pharmacy to get a pro-biotic and couldn't find one that only had lactobacillus acidophilus. The one that seamed to be the most pure (no color, sugar...) was a blend. It has:

Proprietary Probiotic Blend: 1000.00 mg Rice maltodextrin Inulin
Lactobacillus acidophilus
Lactobacillus plantarum
Lactobacillus rhamnosus
Lactobacillus casei
Lactobacillus paracasei
Lactobacillus salivarius
Bifidobacterium bifidum
Bifidobacterium longum

Other Ingredients: Capsule (gelatin & water), Silica

No Artificial Color, No Artificial Flavors, No Preservatives, No Gluten, No Salt, No Wheat, No Soy

Is it OK to use? I'm waiting for my sign up e-mail from GuineaLynx and can't ask there.

Any other suggestions?

Pets At Home stock a probiotic with added vitamin C, called Pro-C Probiotic. It is for general use with a wide range of pets, including guinea pigs.

The ingredients listed are Vit C, lactobacillus acidophilus, enterococcus faecium, FOS soluble fibre prebiotic, electrolytes, dextrose and chlorophyll in that order, no other ingredients are listed. Vetark's name is on the tub, and the website is given - index. it comes in a 100g tub, in a powder form to be added to water.

Hope your cavy gets better :)

Thanks. I'm in the US, but I'll look for that at a local pet store.

I got Blackie to eat some ground up pellets by mixing them with water and chopped up cilantro, and then rolling the mix into small lettuce leaves. She is a huge veggie eater, but we've cut her off since Thursday to help the stools. I'm hoping her stool stays firm and that she starts to put some weight back on. She is all bones.
