How big of a container do I need to store 25 pounds of hay. I want to use a wicker laundry basket, but I am not sure how much will fit into it. How much hay will fit into this basket?

Well, Lbs are weight. Containers are volume. It's hard to say how much volume, 25 lbs will take up. I'll give you an idea of my set up though. I order 9 lbs of hay for my two pigs. I have two rectangular 105 qt containers. Each one holds about half of the 9 lbs of hay.

I wouldn't use wicker. I think the little pieces and dust would fall through. I have a huge 50 gallon Rubbermaid container with a snap lid for a compressed 45lb bale of hay.

That doesn't help me because I can't picture how big the containers are. I am pretty sure the container I have linked here is way less than 105qts, so does that mean I will only be able to fit about 4 pounds in it?

I saw it suggested on guinealynx and I like how it looks. I would do as they did an line it with a breathable fabric.

That would be ok then. But I don't believe it will hold much hay....

It would hold significantly less than 4 lbs, I imagine. 105 qts is much bigger than the towel hamper you linked to.

It can hold 20 pounds of laundry, so wouldn't it be able to hold atleast 9 or 10 pounds of hay?

How about this than? It has a volume of 21 gallons, and there are 16 ounces in a gallon. 25 pounds of hay is 400 ounces. 21 gallons is 336 ounces. So wouldn't I just need to get two of them for the extra 64 ounces that won't fit?

Well, my containers are 105 qts which is 26.25 gal. I have my doubts from the looks of the hamper that it actually is 21 gallons. It looks much smaller than that but I could be wrong. Hard to tell without relative size context.

I think it would hold a few pounds no doubt, maybe all 9. It's hard to say without seeing how much space your 9 lbs of hay takes up and how big the laundry basket is. Compressed hay takes up less space than loose hay, for example.

I am confused now. There are a 128 ounces in a gallon, so 128 ounces * 21 gallons is 2688. According to that number 25 pounds- 400 ounces would fit, but that doesn't make sense. 16 ounces of hay that I bought from the store is in a really small bag, and I would be able to fit more than 12 bags in that container, so since 25 pounds of hay is only 25 bags- which are really small, how would it only fit less than four pounds.

Ounces is weight. Gallon is volume. You can have 10 lbs of feathers or 10 lbs of bricks but they aren't both going to fill the same size container.

That is what I was thinking too. I have these 1 pound bags and they are really small. I can probably fit at least 15 bags in each maybe a little bit more, which is 240 ounces. Since 25 pounds of hay is only 400 ounces wouldn't it seem like I could get it all in there?

The looks of something can't tell you how many gallons something has, that is what math is for. It is actually more than 21. I found a container with smaller dimensions all around by atleast 2 inches and it was 21 gallons, so it is actually more than 21 gallons.

Hay needs to breath. Keeping it in a closed container can cause it to mold.

Right, the lid doesn't fit right so it gets air. It's not airtight and its kept indoors away from moisture.
