I use Brita filtered water for my guinea pigs. I was wondering how often do I need to change the filter. It is recommended to change the filter about every 2 months for the average family. But, obviously guinea pigs don't drink as much as humans.

Here is the math. Brita suggests changing the filter every 40 gallons, or more often if your water is very hard. I have a medium size water bottle that is 16 oz.

1 gallon = 128 oz
40 gallons = 5,120 oz.

Assuming you change one bottle once a day...5,120 oz / 16 oz = 320 days = 10 months.

I know that sounds insane after they tell you every 2 months for a family. I change mine very six months, at the same time that I check/change the batteries in my smoke detectors.:)

My pigs have their own Brita water jug, but I just automatically change the filter every 2 months. You're right though, I could actually be getting more time out of each filter.
Food for thought. Thank you :)

Thank you! I'll change my filter about every 6 months then.
