@jenwillis212 It's a 604T bird cage, I got it at $240 (NZD, instead of $520) from the pet shop here...I'm infact going to use my pocket money in a week or so and with 3 other people from NZ do an order for a DCN (save if four people order at the same time) as the small doors are really annoying me and the only cage made in NZ for pet rats in mind can only hold 3 rats at the most.
I've always loved sugar gliders but they're, like many animals not allowed in NZ (So I've never seen a sugar glider, hamster, gerbil, an alive ferret *they are pest and you're not allowed them as a pet* and heaps more...it sucks.).
So if you do get them, pretty please post some pictures for me!!
Why are all of those animals illegal?
It all depends on the rat.
I have my three, Tinker loves tinkering and pulling the pillows I made them up into the hammocks to make a sort of nest, she also makes a mess; Honey Boo Boo is just a little cutie but poos outside of the cage and Boris digs up the bedding.
The four girls I'm rat sitting don't have any bedding or anything they can make a mess from (they don't even have a hammie!).
I rat sat 11 rats over Christmas. The cages with the girls all smelled, but the one with three boys didnt as much. Maybe I can just deal with the boys smell better or something...
But I'd totally tell you to adopt males. I only have one boy and when I just had him the smell wasn't too bad...now they have a rather bad smell...and the little girls down stairs also have the same smell. My cage only smells like nothing/okay for a day.
So when we adopt more rats, It's gonna be neutered males all the way!
....I just have to!
More pictures of my Honey Boo Boo..she devolved cataracts a couple weeks ago in her left eye.

Aww, really? I guess rats wouldn't be for me then. I don't think I could look at a male rats testicles, unless they were fixed, is that safe though? I've heard tons of horrible stories of small animals going under the knife & not waking up.
You can't see my boys testicles as we got him de-sexed when he was only a couple months old. The longer you leave it the more likely it is that they wont 'shrink' up. The rat rescue here de-sexes all rats of both genders (unless for some reason it would put the rat at too much risk). I do know that putting small animals under is risky, but we've so far had good luck with it and haven't lost any.
Couldn't you adopt already de-sexed rats?
And girls could be for you, I could just be strange!
Many moons ago, I had two handme down rats. My sister got them for her sons but I ended up with them for a year or so and I gave them to another sister when I moved from home. She had them for like two years too, they devolved tumors and had to be put down. Mia and Tia use to nest in my hair and went around with me all over. Much different from piggies, they wanted attention from everyone.
