Hi my guinea pig is in a big spacious cage with 4 other female Guinea pigs. They all have hides ect and have lived together for over a year. so when my pregnant guinea pig had her babies over night I found 2 dead and half eaten.. what could have gone wrong? :( the 3 live babies are doing well and are perfect.. it?s just sad 2 didn?t make it.
My questions are
1-would they have been born dead and then eaten.
Or
2-have they been attacked by the other females while mum was giving birth. My girls don?t squabble or carry on.. they all get along well and they treat the new babies like they?ve always been in the cage with them.. anyway I?m rambling on.. if anyone has some sort of explanation I?d love to hear.
Thankyou.

Five is a pretty large litter. It's not uncommon to have stillbirths, especially with larger litters. The shape of the piggy uterus usually means there's often a "queue" for pups to be born, and if the placenta detaches too soon before a pup is birthed, the pup will die in utero from lack of oxygen.
In my experience, when pups have been partially eaten (I've only one particularly nervous piggy do this out of all the piggies that have come into my care pregnant) it's because the mum tries to clean up much like she does with the placentas, or at least that's how I've interpreted the situation. I'd guess the pups were stillborn first and then partially eaten afterwards, if that helps. It's still distressing, I know, but it's unlikely they were partially eaten whilst alive.
