Hello, So I recently adopted two young boars. I have had them for about 2 months now, and I recently boarded them at my exotics vet for a long weekend. While I was gone they got into a fight and RiffRaff tore a chunk out of Meatloaf's ear. Since I have brought them home I have noticed several bite marks on Meatloaf's rump, some look old, but there is one fresh one.
When I am in the room they appear to be well behaved, and if I try and separate them for more than a 1/2 hour they both start whining and try to find the other. I even tried just diving up their cage with grids do they could still see and smell one another, but they started chewing the plastic coating off the bars.
I have a 2x3 cage with a large lofted area, two houses, two food bowls, two water, bottles, etc. At this point I'm wondering if RiffRaff is just going through a puberty phase, or if being at the vet somehow made them nervous? I think it's worth noting that the girl I got them from had them in a rabbit hutch and that her cat tried to eat them on more than one occasion. They are still very jumpy and not well socialized (we're working on that and progress has been made). Do they just need more time? As far as I know these two have always been together. RiffRaff is not preventing Meatloaf from eating or drinking, both have consistent weights for their age.
I have two older, very mellow boars in a different cage I'm wondering if I should put Meatloaf in with them for a while so that RiffRaff can work out his issues? Their cage is 6x2 and when I introduced the big guys to the little ones, Meatloaf did fine with them.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
