Can someone please tell me what the odds are of catching mono 3 times in 8 years??? Seriously!! For the 3rd time, I have a confirmed diagnosis of mono through a blood test! I'm just at the beginning of my illness... and know it is going to get much worse. The first time I really should have been hospitalized, but my parents refused. At one point I had a fever of 104.3 for 3 days, and couldn't physically walk without the help of our dog (otherwise I was so dizzy I would fall over). My spleen swelled, and my liver swelled, I also had every symptom possible, and dropped 20 pounds! The second time was almost as bad, but my fever didn't get that high... I'm hoping, really hoping, I have a mild case.
I'm constantly exhausted! I even had to drop a class to become a part-time student because I began to have a hard time with the work-load (I HAD 4 classes, 2 of which were very reading heavy, like 120 pages a week, so I dropped one of those). This semester is also the first semester I am REALLY living on my own... my first 2 years in college I was in the dorms, and then I got an apartment with a boyfriend for 2 years. We broke up over the summer (which was for the better), and now I am on my own. All my friends from previous years have graduated, and no longer live by me. So, I have no help with the pigs, which usually I am fine with. It's just that right now, a little help every now and then would be nice... but even having mono will not make me neglect my pigs, I just won't be handling them as often for a while, at least they have each other.
I also have no idea how I contracted it! It is spread through saliva, hence called the kissing disease. However, all 3 times, up to 2 months before each time, I never kissed or shared a drink with or anything like that. They say it's rare, but possible to contract it through the air... but contracting it 3 times through the air? Really? If I'm gonna have mono, can't I at least get it the fun way?
I don't know if you would call me lucky or unlucky. I wish I had that kind of luck with something more useful, like winning the lottery! Today my mom told me, "I always knew you were special!"
