1 is too narrow. Do a 2x2 if you are doing a loft.

Well of course more is better, but if you don't have the supplies to make it bigger then you don't have to! Actually a 2x3 minimum with a preferred 2x4 will do, if it saves anything (cage size not loft size) But I love that you're giving them more space! Great for you :) I think lofts take away from floor space though...if you can, just make it all one big cage! They'd love that!
So for your original question, it's really your choice. Either will work. Good luck! :D

please help im stuck on sizes I have 4- 3x4 cages all with 2x3 upper levels.
I love the bottom base size for my boar pairs. I've tried a 2x2 but they spend a lot of time up there and it would get messy fast- so I went with a 2x3. Works MUCH better. :)

I have my herd (four females) in a 3x5 with no loft. I plan to make them a 2x3 loft at some point though.

I use to think a loft would take away too much room for them. It truly does not as long as your bottom base is large enough. Only a few of my pig still do zoomies and the ramps are never in the way.

I've tried both- huge cages (5x6) and multiple levels (a 3x4 is still a wonderful size for 2!). My piggies and I both prefer multiple levels. I often see them run up and down the ramp just because.

The reason you want at least a 2x2 is if you have your kitchen in the loft and both wanted to eatbat the sametime in a 1x2 area, it will be very cramped and lead to spats. And with proper placemet of the ramp, a loft does not take away from floor space.

This was with 4 boars- not 2 ;)
It was a pain to spot clean daily since there were so many places they could go potty! LOL Never going that large again unless I have a huge herd that does wonderful together.

@chip123, My only concern with a loft 2x3 for your cage, is that that covers half of your floor room! It'll be harder to scoop up your little piggies if they hide underneath the loft.

If you could make your cage a 2x5 with a 2x2 loft I feel like you'd be better off. Also this way, you'll be more prepared to handle males if that's what you decide to adopt.
