Hi
My guinea pig, Futte, has stopped eating. He tries to but gives it up. First he stopped eating has pellets and stuff, but now he won’t even eat his veggies. He does drink water. I think there is a problem with his teeth, but since he lost a lot of weight, I’m scared to let him go through the surgery for his teeth before he gains a little weight (my last guinea pig died in the operation because he got too week). I’ve spoken to the vet and he said if a guinea pig drops 20 % of his body weight, he probably won’t make it. And my one might have dropped somewhere around that. I can’t remember what he weighed when I got him 8 months back. For some reason it never crossed my mind that there would be a problem with his teeth, so I haven’t acted on it till now.
He’s about 3 years and 3 months old and somewhat active. It seems as if he’s just really hungry, and not like he’s about to die of old age. I was successful in feeding him crushed pellets mixed with water, and he ate a lot. This also tells me that he wants to eat but just can’t.
I really need some advice on what to do. I’m scared he might die and I want to do everything I can to keep him alive. My plan is to feed him his crushed pellets every hour or so and then see if we can keep it up and maybe get him to gain some weight. Maybe mix in some veggies if he gets fed up of it I know guinea pigs should have access to food and water all the time, and I plan to get up in the night to feed him too? I believe that is necessary?
I’m very concerned, and my overall questions are:
Is there anything else I can do for him to make him gain weight and stay alive?
I do want to spend the money to get his teeth fixed, but should I just go and do it, knowing he might not survive it or continue my home treatment and then make a decision in a day or so?
Any advice would be very helpful.
Thank you
Lykke
