I'm adopting a little girl that was surrendered (to a pet store and then a rescue) because she was bitten and got a cyst filled with strep. She's under vet care and on antibiotics. The cyst is now gone and will be available to come home with me in a few weeks.
My question is, if she has the vet check her out before she comes home, does she need to be quarantined? If she does, what should I look for other than lice, mites, and URIs?
Thanks!

So, you have other guinea pigs at home?

In your case, if the cyst isn't contagious per the vet (and that's a big one, not sure about the strep issue), and if she absolutely doesn't have lice or mites, per the vet, nor any URI and gets a squeaky clean bill of health from a very good vet, then you are probably okay.

I would ask the vet about the cyst issue specifically. But, when in quarantine, the idea is to wait for possible illnesses to manifest and also thoroughly check for lice, mites, etc. So, I'm guessing that she's going to be okay.

But, if you do quarantine, you are looking for all the usual signs of illness: lethargy, standing in a corner, reduced eating, weight loss, skin issues, little bites of food left (dental problems), breathing issues, etc.

Thanks! I would never have thought to look for little bites of food! I really appreciate your help!

Maddie's cyst is gone now and the strep bacteria is almost out of her system. She has been getting weekly checkups with the vet. The rescue is going to keep her 3 more weeks to make sure that the strep is completely out of her system and doesn't return.

I will probably quarantine her just to be safe for Eleanor's sake but hopefully Maddie will be healthy and happy when I finally get her!!!

Good idea. It's wonderful that you are adopting from a rescue.
