One of my pigs has been leaving white gritty spots on her fleece for awhile now, I cut calcium high stuff out of her diet but when I noticed a little blood in her urine I took her to the vet. They did some tests and she has crystals in her urine, which they said were probably rubbing off of stones. We got an antibiotic that we've been feeding her, but I'm wondering what we do now. Caramel doesn't seem to be in any pain and she's as happy and active as ever, the vet said our two options are to do surgery or do nothing, right now I'm leaning toward doing nothing, at least until/if Caramel starts having more symptoms.
Advice please?

I'd get an x ray to check first. She may have UTI or sludge alone hopefully. Sows can sometimes pass them but often they need to be surgically removed.

There are some meds listed at GL you can try too.

I would also ask for an x-ray to help confirm or deny stones.

I just went through bladder stone surgery with one of my boars. The stone was huge, even by human standards. He is on potassium citrate twice a day, extra water by mouth (syringe) and, to keep his little system in balance, lactated ringers alternated with saline + potassium sub q every other day. I have cut his calcium rich foods but also keep a close eye on oxalic acid values as well, as it binds with calcium. I check his urine every day and it ranges from clear to very cloudy but so far no more stones. The crystals are also smaller in size than they were. He is lively and happy and the extra effort for him is worth it a hundred times over. Xrays were a critical part of his treatment, as they helped determine when we "had" to do surgery. That decision came only after the stone lodged in the narrow area of his bladder. But without xrays, we would have been flying blind. The crystals came first, then the stone. Get xrays, then go from there. Best wishes to you and your baby.
