I love all the cute little toys and garlands I see (such as from twilight chinchilla). I am looking into making my own wood toys if possible. I feel like it would be much more fun and cost efficient! My question is what wood would be safe to use? Is balsa wood safe for piggies? Or what about the precut little pieces of wood that are sold at Michael's? Any help would be greatly appreciated

Balsa wood isn't safe due to splintering.
the wood at michaels is pine which is kinda safe, but you don't want your piggies to eat it, and the smell of it over time is bad for them. If you can somehow seal or paint the pine it is ok, but don't keep the piggies on pine bedding or give them anything that smells like pine.
the best woods are poplar, mulberry, and apple wood.
the "bad" woods are plum, peach, eucalyptus, cedar, and pine. (Plum and peach are poisonous, the other three are too full of phenols/aromatic)
Not sure about oak.
you can get poplar wood at a hardware store. Just make sure whatever woods you get harder is better and they can't have any finishes on them
also for painting the chews don't use acrylic paint, use soy based paint ($4 on Amazon)
