I have been enjoying this forum & learning so much that I decided to join even without pigtures to share yet.
We've had guinea pigs since February, when my son's classmate (a 4th grader) rehomed his guinea pigs Chip & Dale to us. Seeing that their cage was too small, I followed the information on this site about putting together a 2x4 C & C cage (and just made a cover, too, using materials from the store part of the website). About a month later, my son got another guinea pig from the store. He was the retired stud guinea pig, free to anyone who would buy hay & pellets. My son felt sad for him, saying, "They're just using him!" and paid from his own allowance to buy the hay & pellets. Since then, Harry's personality has really opened up & he's got quite a fan club among the neighborhood boys as well as us! He is now willing to eat fresh veggies-- I don't think the store ever fed him anything fresh.
They are such lovely creatures, I can't believe it took me til my adult years to discover them. Watching them and hearing the gentle rustle-rustle munch-munch of lettuce and hay is very relaxing. Not to mention the joy of seeing my children grow in patience & compassion while I demonstrate responsible pet care. And the piggies are just plain fun!
I'll post again with pictures soon!
