Hi I am a new member who had some questions.
I got a 7 week old piggy about a week ago. I noticed she had been sneezing. She did manage to run into a dusty area as well. She started to sneeze more so I took her to the vet (who I now know to be not very good) and he prescribed baytril for a uri although he seemed to barely look at her. He didn't even say how long she should be on it! So now I'm questioning everything as I read baytril is terrible for young piggies. She has had 6 doses. She is active and eating and drinking. I am honestly thinking of just stopping it because I don't want to hurt her. She is the exact same after 3 days.

You need an exotic vet, and to stop the Baytril. But, it is dangerous to just stop antibiotics after such a short time without replacing them with something else. Doxycycline would be the drug of choice for a seven week old pig. See if you can find an exotic vet today and get her a new prescription.

I am literally going through the exact same thing with my skinny pig sow. I made the mistake of purchasing my pigs from a pet store, and pet store pigs tend to be sick when you purchase them. Your pig will be perfectly safe on baytril. What baytril will do if she is on it long term is affect her growth, so if this treatment doesn't work for your pig, and your vet wants you to do more treatment of baytril, I recommend you take her to a different vet that has more experience so they can give a more educated diagnosis. Best of wishes to you and your piggie :)

youhadmeatwheek, you are new here. And your information @Snowy9281 is incorrect. Baytril stunts the growth of young guinea pigs. It is sometimes necessary for it to be given to them, if nothing else will address an infection that they have. But it is NOT the first choice, and no one, not even a vet, can say that pig will be "perfectly safe" on Baytril.

Please make sure that any advice you give, particularly medical, is correct. Otherwise, we will moderate your posts.

I may be new here, but I am not new to guinea pigs. Take it from someone who reads every article on guinea pigs, including medical, and plans on being an exotics vet. I said in the reply that it should not be given long term. It would be safer for her to keep her pig on baytril then to suddenly take her off.

Nonetheless, my reply to you stands. As I understand it, even short courses of Baytril can stunt the growth of young pigs. There are also some pigs that can't tolerate Baytril at all, so a blanket assurance that the pig will be fine on Baytril is not warranted here.
