Came across a place near me that adopts out rescued bunnies and other small and furries.

But I go the website and they do adopt rescued animals but, they also breed and show.

As far as breeders go they don't seem to be the worst out there, however, that is not my point..

Would you adopt a rescue (not buy) from a place like this? It seems strange to do adoptions and breed at the same time?

I don't know, what do yall think?

I deffinately would not. The fact that they breed is deffinately very sketchy to me. I wonder, do they really rescue? Or do they claim they nave rabbits up for "adoption" like PetSmart does, to get more people to "adopt" I also looked further in to the pictures, and found some rabbits in SMALL cages, and some housed on wire flooring, which to me is a big NO NO.

I would not invest my money in that to put more money in a breeders pocket.

Ok, I can see your point. Even if the rabbits are rescues...the money I would pay for them would go to the breeder who would then NOT use the money to make better homes for her breeding operation..

I would definitely not adopt from these people. Your money would not go towards helping animals, but to help them breed rabbits.

No way.. many breeders call their 'returns' rescues. It may be the case here.

I've seen their CL ad before. They seem extremely sketchy....breeder and rescuer are two terms that don't really seem to go together.
I wouldn't adopt from them. I would bet anything that they use the so called "rescued" animals for more breeding.

I say no. The word "rabbitry" REALLY turns me off. They are contradicting their own practices by breeding AND rescuing, and with a bajillion homeless buns out there, why bring more into the world when we already have plenty here already? Stick with a chapter of the House Rabbit Society for homeless buns if there's one in your area, or check Petfinder for other adoptable furries.

I wouldn't adopt from someone like them. I'd only adopt from a strictly-rescue rescue. It doesn't really make sense to me why they would do that, maybe to make their business look better. I dunno, something with them just seems off.

I agree - I would not support these people. I just wanted to clarify one thing. As long as the cage has a piece of carpet or wooden board [something flat] for the rabbit to walk or lay on, wire flooring is perfectly acceptable and can be beneficial in cases of chronically sore hocks [caused by too much pressure on the "heel" of the foot because the nails cannot sink into the ground as is natural].
Our rescue uses wire flooring for many rabbits and while it's not preferable, it's certainly not a terrible thing.

On the other hand if they are a good breeder it's possible that people who needed to surender animals asked them where to take them and they ended up taking in surenders. Breeders often buy good quality supplies in bulk so taking in a few rescuse does not cost them much as theya re already set up for lots of animals.

Most of the animals they have look really well cared for. I did see some in show cages but I think the photos were from a show - so that's not a sign of how they house them day to day.

no harm in going over and checking them out in person if they are close by.

I just think that there are some breeders who do the right thing when it comes to helping animals in need and there's no reason not to find out if that's the case. You could also ask about the background of any pet you want to adopt - if they can tell you some details that's a good sign.

either way, good luck finding a new bun

This site does not support breeding.

This breeder is deceiving. It's not a rescue, they probably just take in the animals that people returned and now they are too old to sell so they are considered "rescues."

Definitely do not support this place, adopt from a rescue or find a bunny that's being rehomed.

sorry - I didn't realize that we'er all so close minded as to think that breeders can never do the right thing. And that unlike the rest of us they can't do two thngs at once,

I do undersand that the board does not support breeding (and fully agree with that stand). And I do understand that the adoption fee may be viewed as going to the breeder. But I guesss I'm wrong to think that someone out there might do the right thing by taking in surentered animals if they are already set up to care for animals, and that maybe you can't judge a book by it's cover or tell business/rescue by it's web-site.

I'm in no way saying that this place is ligit... only that unless you talk to them and visit them, you can't know for sure.

I'll be more carefull about what I post.

I just wanted to add that they refuse to allow potential "clients" or adopters to come to their home, which is where they have their rabbitry/rescue. They prefer to meet them in a public place. This would be perfectly fine if they were trying to sell a purse, but seems very fishy when live animals are involved. It's almost as though they're trying to hide something. So it wouldn't really be possible to just go check them out.

OK - I dind't see that and that's a huge red flag. So given that I would not adopt from them.

Any reputable place will let you visit and see their animals and should be happy to show off how well cared fort hey are.

There is so much misunderstanding and false information listed above.

Go ahead and buy from these people. The rabbits look well looked after and kept healthy and happy in the pictures. I would definitely purchase from them.

Breeding is a part of life. There are over 25 000 rabbits at the conventions that breeders bring to show. There is thousands of rabbitries over north america.

Wire is the best thing for rabbits, and in the pictures you can see that they CAN get off of it. The wire is the best way to keep them healthy and disease free. It makes it much easier to clean when you have a large scale of rabbits too.

LauraBean, how does this mean they are trying to hide something? I know a lot of breeders that will not allow people into their rabbitry for prevention of disease. Rabbits are very important to these people and by letting people into the rabbits they are risking their entire herd. Its the same way with most animals.

How do you KNOW its deciving? Can people not do a rescue on the side because they care about animals? Maybe they love animals so much that they want to save as many as they can along side with breeding them for show :)

Im just showing you the other side of this. That is all :)

Oh, yeah, because photos taken for marketing purposes are accurate depictions of conditions - did you just fall off a turnip truck or something to think that's the case? Working in rescue I have seen for myself that what's on the glossy web site is not indicative of anything. I know of ones that looked just lovely which were closed down and hundreds of animals hauled away for the cruel conditions under which the stock was kept.

No kidding. That's why there are so many rabbits and other small animals dumped in shelters or rescues (or set loose to fend for themselves). No need to keep that cycle up.

I wonder - why is it that these breeders feel it's perfectly fine to take their stock to shows, where there will be thousands of people and other rabbits - yet it's "too dangerous" to have ONE person in their rabbitry because THAT might spread disease?

RabbitMan- we've seen the other side (breeder/breeding). In fact, many here have cleaned up after the other side.

This is an ANTI-BREEDING site. Please do NOT come in our home (this forum) and tell people it's ok to buy from breeders. It goes against the principles and philosophies of this forum.
Guinea Pig Cages, Care, Store, Photos of Guinea Pigs and More Forum! - Information in Forum : About Guinea Pigs
https://www.guineapigcages.com/foru...326-about-animals-other-than-guinea-pigs.html

Also want to mention that breeder links are not allowed. I must have missed this thread when it was originally posted but the link has been removed now.

There are pictures of rabbits in cages - in CLEAN cages on that website. And you can tell the conditions of rabbits through pictures - the rabbits are bright and healthy. If they are showing and their rabbitry is registerd with the ARBA then the rabbits and conditions are obviously up to standard.

Yes - i hear you on the cruel conditions from people who "breed". I 100% get you on that and it IS horrible what some people do. The problem is, not everyone is like that. There are lots of good and responsible breeders out there. We all get accused of treating animals the way some over run places do. It is NOT true, and there is a lot of false info. One of my good friend has over 300 rabbits, and over 300 guinea pigs. They are ALL in good conditions and all looked after. There are SO many responsible people out there that the "pet people" ( what breeders call them) dont see. They ONLY see what they want to and only see the "bad" stuff. They pick out any little thing and flip.

The ones being dumped in shelters are most likely not from breeders like the one that was listed above. A lot of stock gets sold to other breeders, and a lot of stock not good enough for the show table is butchered or found appropriate pet homes.

Breeders find it okay to take to shows because rabbits are health checked. Any rabbit looking ill is banned from the show. Simple as that. Also, because its a community of fellow breeders. Everyone knows everyone, and trust. A show herd is also isolated from the main herd after the show to make sure they didn't catch anything there. The fear of ever getting snuffles is HUGE in rabbit breeders. You dont know how scary that disease is. If a rabbit sneezes it is OUT in isolation right away. No one can risk getting that into their rabbits. THAT is why. Pet people may have it on them, breeders most likely wouldnt.

I am not trying to start an argument AT ALL. Please do not take this like that. I am just trying to show you the other side to this.

Thanks for reading :)

@ Rabbitman - you do understand that having a rescue to find homes for rabbits and at the same time breeding to create MORE rabbits is defeating the purpose of rescue? Rather than working on getting animals into good homes to diminish the overpopulation problem, they are creating MORE of an overpopulation problem by breeding.
