The more you can imitate their instinctual environment, the longer they live and healthier. I had one that lived twelve years before. Just like dogs and cats....................

Hard pine pellets do not imitate their natural environment any more than fleece does and has been pointed out, guinea pigs, as we know them, do not exist in the wild. There's nothing really wrong with either bedding but the implication that one is more natural than the other is erroneous, and the notion that they will live longer on pine pellets is ... Laughable. There are many, many factors that determine longevity and environment is one component, but it certainly isn't the biggest piece as long as it's healthy and not harmful. What you choose for your pets is entirely up to you but I can say that of the animals I currently have cushed out on fleece, they are all healthy, happy and comfortable; and for my part, not using disposable bedding is better from an environmental standpoint too.

I don't think that that is true as our guinea pigs aren't the same as the wild ones.

@MrWhistles , have you actually tried pellets? They're by far the best bedding at odor control and the length of time between necessary cage changes. My two have never had any foot problems on pellets, nor do they run around any less when using them. So since they're not suffering, acting any different, or complaining, I'm not going to worry about something thinking pellets are a "hard uncomfortable surface."

Yes I do use pellets. I use them in my horses' stalls.
I go off of what I feel for my animals. If the bedding feels uncomfortable to me then I will not use it. I actually dampen the pellets to expand them for my horses' stalls. Makes for a so much more comfortable bedding.

It is all a matter of preference, this is true. I use my bedding in my compost pile, so it is definately enviromentally friendly, helps to break up our hard clay soil we have here.
