My mom isn't sure that corroplast is entirely safe for guinea pigs (yes i know everyone here is having great success, but you know moms.) Anyway. I need to know if my guineas will be sick, or worse if they do chew on the corroplast.

Mine have never even attempted to chew on it and I see no evidence that they've chewed it while we were not around.

Mine take nibbles on it, but they can't bite through it at all... at least, not unless they were REALLY determined. If you (or your mom :D ) are worried about it, I've heard of people taking those folder binder edges and putting those over the coroplast edges.

if they did chew on it, is the plastic toxic?

folder binder edges? What are those?

I got mine at Office Depot, it is hard to explain what they are... And I imagine that any type of plastic that is ingested can't be good for guinea pigs. I mean we (humans) don't go around eating plastic because it's not safe so I highly doubt that it is safe for guinea pigs either.

they are like long skinny triangular prisms with open bases so you can see through to the other end. one edge is slit to slide papers into, it acts as a binding material instead of staples, paperclips etc.

sorry about all the geometrical terms. i just finished math homework.

yeah, i dont think binder endges will better the situation any

lol, yep that pretty much explains it (I didnt even want to try, knowing my expeirience with trying to explain things lol).

lol, yeah. im really not the best explainer either.

lol.

do you guys have a link to a page on staples or something that would have a picture or something of these binder thingamajigs?

So what would happen to my piggies if they chewed on the corroplast or the binder things?

My pigs chew on the coroplast, but they don't necessarily ingest it.

No ill effects. Just happy pigs in a roomy cage.

the only thing you need to worry about is if the piggies swallow it. it can get stuck and cause blockage.

but my piggies dont touch the coroplast.

my piggies have chewed coroplast plenty of times and they are fine.. especially my girl.. she even ate some plastic once and she's still fine.. ^^

CavySpirit has some suggestions about this - my girl was really chewing and swallowing pieces so I glued flat wooden dowels (from craft store) all along the coroplast edges.

good idea! what kind of wood was it?

Balsa wood, I think.

Cool, just make sure that the glue is 100% non-toxic!

My pigs were chewing too so I went to a few office stores and tried to find those report spine things but u can only get them in packs of 5 and I would of needed lots, so my husband took me to Menrds and we got "edging" for paneling that you would do walls with and it works great!!!! It comes 8 foot long for $1.98 ea. They tried to chew it and couldn't. lol I cut it down and put it on every edge of coroplast around whole cage and ramps.
