I am planning on being the proud owner of two cavies soon but i can not decide what sex to get the two in. Should i get two males, two females, or a male and a female and get 1 of them spayed/neutered. I am buying a C&C cage that is the 10.5 ft squared so my cavies will be happy. Also I live in Tulsa, Oklahoma and I would prefer to get my guinea pigs from a breeder not a pet store so if you can send me an e-mail with the phone # of a breeder in Tulsa If you send me a post asking for my e-mail i'll send it to you.

Thanks For all your help
CaviesRule26 (my first name is Tyler)

Myself I get 2 females. As I heard some males will have bad smell? Females will have less fighting? So far I didn't see my girls fight.

Yea. Girls are less likly to fight and no one will have to risk surgery.Good luck!!

Get two sows! Man, I have boas and they fight a lot. While my sows on the other side were living happily in their cage.

Two males in a proper environment can get along just fine. Please do NOT propagate the myth that males fight.

AND having worked with HUNDREDS of guinea pigs, it's also my experience that overall, males make better pets -- they tend to be more friendly and more lap-piggie like.

Shelters and rescues are full with males because of these preconceived notions.

Thanks

Thanks for informing me about my mistake I will be perfectly happy with getting two males I'll make sure not to spread that myth any more. If I lived in San Fransisco I would get my piggies from your shelter but I live in Tulsa so if anyone knows of a breeder in Tulsa give me a shout.

Males...

Someone told me not to get males since everytime they get in heat they spray all over the cage, and their semen will set like super glue at the base of their penis causing infections; and you'll have to clean that off everyday until they get back to normal.

I started with 1 male, got a second and they were fine... and just recently I added a third to my little herd, (after quarentine!) yes there are a few disagreements but they have to discover their own pecking order. I have now had 3 males and 1 female and I think I will always have males versus females.

My first was a male. He is the sweetest pig that i have ever come across. He even knows his own name. I call him and he perks up and walks to the side of the cage. The only other pig that I have that can even begin to compete with him is his son.

P.S. The only time a pig sprays urine is when the sow wants to get a very interested boar away from her butt. The boars DONT spray. Thats cats that you are thinking of.
