Which food pellet is better?

I know from reading previous posts that we shouldn't feed anything besides alfalfa pellets to young guinea pigs... I just finished my first bag (it had seeds and such in it. Sorry!) and purchased 2 other types:

1. Kaytee Forti-Diet (nothing else besides pellets, from what I see from the bag)
2. Sun Seed Sunscription VITA with garden vegetables (mostly pellets but I see a tiny piece of carrot here and there)

Which is better?? Help!

Both of those pellets are crap. The Kaytee is at least a plain pellet vs. another crappy seed mix.

Try to get Oxbow somewhere.

I know; Oxbow is the best. I don't see it in the pet stores near where I live. I should've ordered it online before my first bag ran out. That's what I'm planning to do next.

If you need a temporary fix use Katee timothy complete.

We use nutriphase guinea pig pellets

The pigs can go without pellets for a while, they are only a supplement. How long will the shipping take?

Nutriphase is another crappy pellet. It's made for PetSmart exclusively. That should tell you everything right there. I believe it has ethoxyquin in it which is a known carcinogen that causes cancer.

I just learned that yesterday from slap_maxwell, about the Nutriphase. Why do they sell something like that?

I guess that's a rhetorical question...why do they do anything that they do? Still, I feel bad that I have been feeding something dangerous for months, and that I took their word for it when I knew those people didn't know anything about pigs.

We are talking about PetSmart's own brand of guinea pig food. That should say it all right there. PetNotSoSmart is in the business of selling anything they can for animals whether it's unsafe or not good period. They only care about the money, not the animals.

I'm not sure where in New Jersey you are, but I did a search on the Oxbow site based on a zip coed I have for NJ and it gave me a few stores. So...try this...

Just put in your zip code and it will give you all the places that are near to you.

Good luck!

I use VitaKraft (vet recommended)!!!!!
My piggies love it.

what are the ingrediants in it?

Thanks for asking :)
It has Vitamin C,A,B,D,E it also has dried Timothy and alfalfa,Barley, Corn, pea flakes, sunflower oil (no seeds) zinc and calcium.
It is very healthy and no extra stuff that our piggies do not need or cannot tolerate. I think my boys love it so much because of some of the dried veggies.

Yeah, mine is a mix too and it sounds like yours piggieslover.

Can you please list all the ingredients so I can see what is in it besides what you mentioned. You say its very healthy and had no extra stuff that piggies don't need or can't tolerate. They should not have the dried veggies as they can pose a choking threat. Extra Calcium can cause bladder stones.

Taken from the pellet thread at gl https://www.guinealynx.info/forums/viewtopic.php?t=3748:
PELLETS TO AVOID AT ALL COSTS
1) Hartz
2) GEISLER foods (Sargent's pet products)
3) VITAKRAFT/GERTY

Please read the link I gave you.

Mine are called Allen and Page pellets - the dried peices are just as big as the fresh vegetables they get daily. Doesn't matter anyway, I don't even feed them that often.

Thank's so much for posting this, it says there's a pet supply store not even 2 miles from my house that sells oxbow stuff =D

Lilo

Glad I could help. Sometimes, there are supply stores near us that we don't even know about.

Yeah, except they list a nasty dirty pet selling store in my area. I went there (against my better judgement) to get the Oxbow pellets and couldn't even find them. Of course I couldn't stay too long. Had to get out of there before I said something about the THREE adult gps AND a rabbit in the small glass aquarium. Of course the GPs were on "sale" all three for $19.99. Ugh.
