I bought my puppy from a pet store 4 years ago and found out for the first time about puppy mills. My baby was from a puppy mill.It actually showed me on his paper work where he came from.I have adopted all my animals since. Now being a new piggie lover:love:(both my girls are adopted)and reading so much about small animals being treated the same as dogs in mills(I had NO idea until doing research) I have decided not to support any pet stores that sell animals not even for food or other items. My question is-where do I shop?the only place I have found that doesnt sell animals is Tractor Supply Co. and they do not carry the oxbow pellets that are recommended for my piggie. The one place that does carry them in my area sells small animals....Also the tractor supply is limited on supplies unless its a rabbit or farm animal.Any suggestions would be appreciated!Thankyou!also im not sure if this is being posted in the correct area.I dont have the whole forum thing figured out yet!!! Thanks again!

Good for you for not supporting pet mills!

Some of us live near pet shops that don't sell animals, but most don't. KMS Hayloft, Grass Hays & Fortified Feeds From the Valleys of the Pacific Northwest is a great place for buying pellets and even hay, if you can't find a good local source. Pet Supplies | Dog & Cat Supplies, Pet Meds | DrsFosterSmith.com Pet Products also has pet items.

I use Nextag - Compare Prices Before you Buy to find people who are selling the items I want to see if I can find them locally. It will show prices from particular stores, but also the name of the store. Some will be online stores, others will be local, like Walmart. You'll see the usually pet mill culprits in there, like PetSmart and Petco, but you can just ignore those.

Welcome to the forum!

I'm not sure where you live in Indiana, but I buy my supplies at Pet Supplies Plus. They don't sell animals and they carry Cavy Cuisine. They even order 50 lb boxes of Oxbow Orchard Grass for me for $62 which includes tax.

Since all the pet supply stores in my area sell garbage hay and pellets, I order Oxbow through my vet. Since she sells Oxbow Critical Care she can order other Oxbow products from their warehouse. Maybe this could be an option for you? She also charges less for the pellets and hay than most pet stores, which is also a plus! Good luck with your search!

I do not go into petstores that sell animals period. I know they are a weakness. I order all my hay from KMS her hay is beyond amazing and I will not order from anyone else. I order my pellets from a pet food warehouse that will get me a 55 lbs bag Cavy Cusine. It all lasts me quite awhile. Buying in bulk is more expensive, but in the long run it will save you money.

How do you keep your pellets fresh? Are they packaged in smaller bags or are they in one large bag?

I have a friend who orders pellets in huge quantities, and she uses dark-colored (the Vitamin C degrades in sunlight) airtight storage containers from Target.

Which Petco is that, specifically? I live in the metro area and absolutely all of the Petcos I've been to sell animals. I'd love to visit one where they don't.

I live in Portland, OR and a few years back they stopped selling animals. Some may or may not have fish, but that's it. No birds, rats, guinea pigs, lizards etc. It sounds like this is a local thing since your Petco does still sell them. All of our Petsmart still sell animals.
