When is a piggy considered an adult?

I've got two sows and I know the usual adult weight for sows is 700-900g, but I don't know when a piggy is considered to be an adult. Mine are 18 weeks old. Are they adult at a year or earlier?

I would think so, or around the 1year mark

Mine seems to be pretty much her adult weight, but I swear that her personality is very much that of a young piggy.

How much should an adult male weigh? My boys are well over 1kg

i've heard that they are offically adults at around 8 months, when they can stop being fed alfalfa pellets and such. someone, correct me if i'm wrong!

Someone told me 6-8 months too.

phew! im not completely off, then

Thanks for your replies. Mine currently weigh 772g and 793g. They each tend to increase their weight by 15-30g per week. I'm not sure whether I should be concerned about this weight gain or not. I'm presuming it is down to them growing into an adult, rather than putting on excessive weight.

Does this sound like too much or just about right, at this stage of 18-19 weeks old?

MilesWaterson,
your piggies sound normal. when i got my piggies (both at 5 weeks old) they gained weight pretty fast also. you cant really tell how old a piggie is from just their weight becuase it differs from pig to pig.

as far as being an adult, i've heard about 8 months also.

Woah, I just weighed my pigs today and they are heavier than I expected! Furlong is 2lb 11oz and Ascot is 2lb 6oz. Chunky piggies or what? :)

Well, it's now 25 weeks and they weigh 901g and 881g. I know their age because I was there when they were born (a friend's piggy that we were looking after gave birth - a complete suprise - thank the petstore she got it from for that).

Be careful, folks. Sexually adult, emotionally mature, and full grown are different things. As you can see in our own society, we have adult children and childish adults. The important thing to note here is that cavies are sexually capable in as little as three to four weeks, regardless of when the are emotionally or sexually mature, or full grown.

It's anywhere from eight months to a little over a year, depending on how your definition of grown up is.

What I'm really trying to determine is at what age should they stop growing/putting on weight. I want to know whether my piggies are overfeeding because they keep putting weight on or if they're still just growing.

Mmm, I was wondering this too. Thanks everyone! Libby still has 2-4 months to finish growing then...

It should be about a year, but this differs from pig to pig. After a year and a half, they're definitely done growing.
