Hi, I found this chew block at a local pet store the other day. The thing is it didnt looks apropriate for guinea pigs ( even though its meant for them). I forget what its called, but it was a grey cube and it had a rough feeling to it, kind of like sand paper. Its made to keep their teeth trim. Anybody know what it could be and if its safe?

Next time I visit the store again, I'll get more information on it.
Thanks.

If its a salt block or mineral block it isn't good for piggies. Just from your description I wouldn't get it. Most of the things that are made for piggies aren't appropriate for them and will actually cause them more harm than good, like pellet mix with nuts and seeds, exercise wheels and balls, and all those "gourmet" treats.

Could it have been a pumice stone? I think that those are meant for teeth trimming, but I doubt they're good for pigs. It could have been that, or maybe a mineral or salt block?

Thanks Doc, pummice stone was what I was originally thinking but I couldn't remember the name of it. And no they aren't good for piggies either. The best "treats" you can give you piggies are veggies they don't get very often or fruit now and then in addition to unlimited hay and their regular veggies.

If you feed your pigs unlimited hay, this should keep their teeth down. No need to buy anything fancy. The pet store just wants to make money from you.

Oh dont worry, my uncle has a farm and thats where we get our hay. My pigs get plenty of it:p I just thought the "thing" I found was very weird and it didnt look riight for pigs. It wasnt a mineral stone. But now that were talking about salt licks, I buy little 60cent salt wheels at the pet store and my pigs use them quite a bit, are they bad? Right now they have a carrot flavored one on their cage.

They just make your pigs thirsty.

They also burn the tongue. Try licking it.

Ha ha ha ha... i'm sorry that just sounded funny Ruby! It sounds like a dare from when i was a kid... ha ha ha...
