Hello,

This is my 2nd attempt to post, so sorry if posted twice.

I have just began researching guinea pigs and have read a lot on the internet and watched a lot of youtube, lol.

We are planning to get a couple of girls soon, but want to be sure we are set up and ready first.

I have seen the recommended size cage for 2 is 10.5 sq feet. Is the recommended size also the desirable size of a cage for guinea pig owners of 2? Or should I go a tad larger?

Thanks in advance.

The cage size recommendations is on the main page of this website. Click the Home tab.

Well bigger is always better, so if you have the materials and space, it's great to go bigger than the recommended. I have 2 girls in a 2 x 4 with a 1 x 2 loft and I think they have a reasonable amount of space but sometimes even that seems cramped. So if you can go larger, say a 2 x 5 with or without loft, that would be great and then if you should decide to add a third piggie, you'll be in good shape.

Hi,

Welcome to GPC. You are correct that the recommended size is 10.5 sq.ft. However, the pigs would prefer larger space if you can provide them.

Thanks for all the quick replies.

I would say at least a 2x5

I've got my two current girls in a 2x5, and I honestly couldn't imagine keeping them in a smaller cage. I'm actually thinking of expanding it when I move in a couple months time to a 2x6.

You could also try doing a 3x4 if you have the space. The extra width makes the cage much more spacious (equivalent to a 2x6) without taking up a lot of room. My three boars are in a 3x5.

Bigger is defnitely always better, so I would say as big as you have space for :)

I used to have my two girls in a 2x3, and as soon as I moved to a slightly bigger place, I set them up at a 3x5. Now, it seems like a 3x5 is a pretty good size, and I would expand more if I had more room. The 2x3 seems absolutely tiny and not enough space.
