Can anyone identify my little Snickers? He is 6 weeks old and has baby soft smooth hair that isn't to terribly long. No swirls. I have two pictures, the second one I pushed his hair up to show how long it is.

How adoreable. love that little tuft of hair.

I forgot to mention that his hair is much different from Axle's. It is longer and softer. I think Axle is an American

Here is a better view of his hair.

He's a Silkie

Yup, he's a silkie. Is that a crown on his head? What a sweety.

Right, that's a Silkie for sure!

What are the characteristics of a silky? My two-month old sow actually looks kinda like the picture, except that she is tri-colored. Her fur is not long, but its definetely not short either and she is unbelievably soft. Anyone have any ideas? I don't yet have a good picture of her because she doesn't like to sit still for more than 2 seconds at a time.
Oh... forgot to mention that her fur is completely straight with no rosettes, curls, crowns or anything else.

Oh, I am so excited. I wanted a long haired piggie. What luck! When will it start to get noticably longer?

Silkie/Sheltie: Long hair (floor length) that goes back towards the body rather than falling in the piggie's face. No rosettes or fringe. The fur on the head is short, between the ears and at the cheeks, the fur starts to become longer. The hair falls straight to the rear.

Coronet: Is a longhaired guinea pig with a head rosette (crest). Other than this one rosette, the body may not show any other rosettes. A Coronet is basically a Sheltie but with a crest on the head.

Shorthairs/Americans: They should have straight, soft, shiny, laying hair of about 2 - 3 cms of length (the top coat is somewhat rougher of texture). Creams, Buffs, Saffrons, and Whites generally have longer fur which has to be taken into consideration. There may be no whirls or rosettes in the coat.

I really don't think snickers is a total silkie. I think he is an american mixed with a sheltie and he may be a satin. I have one of those mixes (Chatty) and her hair is medium length but longer on the butt and she is a satin and her fur is soft, but Moppy who is a sheltie has even softer silkier feeling fur. I think my moppy has some Texel or something mixed in her because her hair at the ends has waves to it. Moppy was about snickers age when I got her and her hair was floor length and now it is even longer. I trim the hair on her butt to keep it out of pee but the sides have grown quite a bit.

oh...ok. I think my girl is also a mix between an american and a sheltie. Her fur is not extremely long, but I do have to give her butt baths quite often because her back fur (white) falls down under the floor, so she usually ends up sitting on it when she goes to the washroom, but it is not quite that long in any other areas. When she lays down though, she does look like a little furball. Her fur has grown so much that she actually looks the same size as my 7-8 months girls, even though she is only 2 months, but her actual body is still smaller then theirs.

Does my sheltie mix require any special care to insure that her fur stays as soft as it is now??? Besides the basics of good housing and nutrition.

Can anyone tell me what kind of guinea pig bubble guine is?

I am not an expert on breeds, but have been trying to learn more about how to tell the different types. With my silkie/sheltie, I give her a good brushing every day and keep the fur on her rump trimmed up nicely and she gets a bath with bunny shampoo if she gets really messy. Other than that, I don't know any more special care.

So does anyone what kind of guinea pig bubble guine is?

looks like an american

We would call Snickers a "Sheltie" if he lived in the UK!
I've shared my life with some lovely rescue Sheltie girls, now sadly passed on...but great personalities, still loved and missed. I have a "soft spot" for this type!

Beautiful colour too, very unusual. Lucky you!

My Carrot is a smoothhair Dutch and bubble guine looks a bit like him, so he could be a Dutch. I can't see bubble guine very well in that pic though.

Bubble guine is not a dutch. Dutch cavies are white with one other color, and a blaze and a white band around the middle (witch BG does have). Bubble guine looks like a tricolor american cross.

He looks like an american or american cross to me.
