I have asked this question before but I wasn't specific enough so I didn't get the answer I was looking for. I am bringing my piggies to vet tonight cause I think they are reinfected with lice. In cleaning out their cage, what can I use that will kill lice in the cage. Bleach and vinegar will not do. Is there something that has been used by you that was effective in treating the cage also? Is there some sort of lice spray for cages? I use shavings, so I will clean that out and then vacuum the coroplast but all it takes is one spec to be left behind that may reinfect my piggies.

Vinegar and water will work. Have a higher concentration of it though, 3:1 maybe.

I always use straight vinegar whenever I clean cages. I have also used this when I had lice and it has killed them fine.

Contrary to popular belief vinegar does not kill nits and has little effect on the lice. This has been stated by many vets and on different medical sites on the internet.

I am not sure what disinfectent you could use but I know that when people get lice, the best way to get them out of everything is to not have anything alive go near them, so that the lice die of starvation. As far as I know the lice will stay so long as there is food for them, so if you have another temporary cage to put your piggies in for a little while, the lice should die on their own and then you can just use the vinegar to ensure that the cage is clean. I don't know if this is convenient for you, but I'm sure they would happily put up with a pet store cage (if you have one) for a little while if they no longer have to deal with lice.
I am not sure about this for animals, so anyone correct me if I'm wrong. I just know that this is what most of my class did years ago when we had a lice outbreak.

Many websites and people recommened using straight vinegar to help dissolve nits, although they do not dissolve completely.

Lice and nits cannot stick to/survive on smooth services, so using vinegar and wiping the coroplast will work. It's worked for me and it has worked for others, theres no harm in trying.

okay thankyou

I don't know if it would work but they do sell shampoo to specifically kill lice. Maybe washing the cage with that would work. Then, disinfect with the vinegar and water solution just to be sure the shampoo is all gone.

Oh no!! My GB 's had lice too! when you went to the vets did they perscribe any thing for them? mine did, it is some kind of liqued (they made it strawberry flavored) that kills the lice over a 4 week period. my boys love it! i guess it taste good. when i asked my vet what i could use to kill the little vermin he said that just physicaly cleaning the cage helps. i started then on their meds about 3 weeks ago and not they have are lice free and all i used was viniger and water to clean the cage. i think its easier to clean them (lice) out if you have fleece. they live better in the shavings and can "hide" in them better. hoped i helped ------------Tink

Hi. Spoke to my vet. All we can do is clean out the cage thoroughly and use 1 part bleach to 10 parts water. After wiping down, rinse off with water and let air dry for 15 minutes before putting anything back in the cage.
