Im 13 my mom is allegric and my dad had a guinea pig in the 70's and guinea pigs are expensive and the rescue homes only give them away in pairs

The cost is nothing compared to the vet bills. Fuzzy Lumpkins vet bills will total over $1000 easily. George's was close to $500. Neither of them lived, but at least we know they were given every chance to do so.

The reason rescues only adopt out pairs, or a single to be a companion to another pig, is because guinea pigs are SOCIAL animals and thrive in the company of their own species. They are lonely and depressed when forced to live alone. Even those that cannot be paired, do better when housed around other pigs so they can hear, see, smell them . . .

I'm glad you are here now doing research but hopefully a lesson taken away from this will be to research first, so you can be prepared to meet the needs of your pet properly. Perhaps if you show your parents the site and the information on how to make C&C cages (and how inexpensive and easy it is to do so) and also show them the information on the Social Life page at https://www.cavyspirit.com they will reconsider and help you do your best to improve the quality of your piggies life.

I did my research asked for 2 and i got 1......

If you did your research you would have adopted a pair and not have a single pig from a pet store living in a pet store cage.

Why can't you get your piggie a friend? Piggies are much happier on having a friend of their own species and they CAN die of lonleyness (sp) . Also please look into making a C&C cage.

"If you did your research you would have adopted a pair and not have a single pig from a pet store living in a pet store cage."

Exactly.

When I was 12 (the age when I got my first GP) I also did my research and I was only allowed 1 no matter how much I asked, pleaded or begged. Winnie is a child, and if his parents will only allow him to have one, then that's the bottom line.

Winnie, since your GP is on her own, you will need to be her substitute friend. You will need to give her all your spare time with cuddles and feeding while she is out of her cage, so she gets used to you. If you're crazy enough (like me!), you can try squeaking at her too! Keep pleading with your parents that you can adopt another homeless one (maybe you can do this when you've proved that you're responsible for just the one?). In the meantime, try and spend as much time as possible with your piggy so she doesn't get lonely. If you do as AmiableAnimals suggested and show your parents how dedicated you are by posting on this site, then you never know how lucky you might be!

My parents wouldn't let me get a second for ages. But I just kept bringing it up casually & every now & then I'd show them a new care guide stating the importance of two. The one at https://cavyspirit.com is excellent.

If your mom is allergic, she's as allergic to one as she is to two. Maybe put an air refresher near the cage?

Anyway, you've been given plenty of advice to pick up your guinea pig. I let mine out for floortime everytime I clean the cage. My cage is on the floor though, so all I have to do is open the door & they run out. When it's time to go back in, I let them know they're going to get vegetables.

Thank you for your kind words, everyone. I was starting to get a bit frustrated with him and he is still refusing to use proper punctuation.

No problem. I think a mod should give him a warning. He may not listin to us, but he will listin to a mod.

I do not think any human can truly be a replacement for a piggy companion. If I could not provide the ideal environment e.g. large cage, companion, etc. I would have stuck to something smaller and more solitary liike a hamster. As for guinea pigs being expensive you bet they are. Providing a safe bedding, good quality pellets, hay, and fresh vegetables doesn't come cheap. Then you have the cost of wellness visits to the vet plus if they get sick you can be looking at hundreds of dollars in diagnostics, and treatment.

Yes, piggies are very exensive to take care of.

Winnie, on this forum we ask that you use standard punctuation, grammar, and spelling. Not only is it easier for native English speakers to read posts quickly if they're written with the accepted punctuation, etc., but non-native speakers have a much harder time with run-on sentences, misspellings, and strange punctuation. You should write your posts like you're writing an assignment for English class in school. This is not a chat board.

wow this is like a hole conversation!
lol dont worry winnie, animals dont hold any grudges:)
im shure your a good cavy parent. I have had mine (i have two) one of them for 6 years and one of them for 11 months, and they still run and hide when i try to pick them up!
its like a game to them. Dont worry too much just corner her and pick her up carfully. when i change my cage i either put mine outside in there pen, give them floor time, or put them in their carrying cage. unless i get someone else to hold them while im doing it.:)

What makes me so bad because i bought my GP from a pet store and i shop there all the time.My parents agreeded last night to get my another GP when the one i have is older

You're supporting a pet store that sells animals from pet mills and backyard breeders while the animals in shelters are put to sleep because there are not enough homes.

Iam suppose to let local job disappaer and pet stores disappaer. IAM SUPPORTING PET STORES BECAUSE I WANT PRODUCTS FOR MY PIGS SIMPLE EXAMPLE I WANT A PET STORE RATHER THAN NO PET STORE

NO PROFIT=CLosing OF Store

there are only 3 petstore in a 13 km raduis do you want me to go 20000000000 kilometeres for food

Our local pet store does mighty well given that they're the only stockist of carefresh (for the hammy's cage and the piggies' litter tray) within a 20 mile radius. They stopped selling animals 10 years ago, have posters in the window of animals in need of a home in the local SSPCA, and they're doing just fine profit-wise. I'm sure local jobs and the shops' profits wouldn't suffer if they stopped selling animals.

Im the youngest person in the Forum and iam not a parent like u are but i cannot just disobey my parents they would belt me.IM NOT 20 or 30 LIKE SOME PEOPLE HERE WHO CAN MAKE THERE OWN DESCIONS
