Hello there! Roo here.

Well, I am looking to figure out some more affordable, high vitamin vegetables because I am hoping to get some boars soon and would like to give them a healthy diet and some variety.

So, does your pig have a favorite, more affordable vegetable? If I could I would buy the most expensive and high quality vegetables in the market, but as times are hard it never hurts to save a bit here and there. (No, I will not be skimping on nutrition. The pigs will receive everything that they need as a part of their diet)

Fresh vegetables only, please. I am not interested in feeding canned or frozen vegetables due to their lack of nutrition and their additives.

Are there any chain grocery stores or markets where you like to get vegetables? I live in the U.S., so I am familiar with Walmart, Kroger, Ingles, Food City, Food Lion, Costco, Sams Club, and others. So which do you like the best?

here in central new jersey there are a number of "asian" food markets and "garden/farm" markets. i have found that overall they have the widest selection and greatest value of fresh fruits and veggies. i no longer buy produce at my regular shop-rite supermarket. sometimes the quality of the greens isn't the best, but their prices are at least 50% less than shop-rite's. and they're right on my way home! :)

Green peppers are great for vitamin C and cost less then their red, yellow, and orange counterparts. To mix things up you can feed the other colors on occasion if you feel like splerging a little bit.

I really like buying a pre-made Spring Mix salad. It's got red and green leaf lettuce, chard, arugula, and a bunch of other things. The one at Walmart in the produce section is great! Where ever you decide to get it, just make sure it doesn't have spinach in it. Some do, some don't.

Here in Florida, cherry and grape tomatos are always on sale. My piggies love them, although they usually just eat the skin and "meat" of the tomato and leave the seeds.

Really, the whole goal of providing vegetables to your guinea pigs is to feed a wide variety. I believe the general recommendation is 2-3 kinds of greens and 1-2 other vegetables. For me this usually means a slice of bell pepper plus two lettuces and extras from the veggies we make for our own dinner. I don't know if you have a Sprouts or a Fresh n Easy in your area, but these two places consistently have good prices on veggies. You'll just have to go to multiple stores and keep track of prices to figure out which stores have the best prices.

Good luck!

I read that sticky, and it was wonderful! I had read it before you mentioned it, but as I don't exactly keep up with vegetable prices since I don't have pigs yet, I was curious. Thank you very much!

I have bought the spring mix with spinache and my piggie loves the mix. I also every other day switch from that with carrots to parsley and clintro and green pepper. then a apple slice once a week and a piece of orange once a week

I have also gave them kale before I get something different every time I go i get all excited about going to that side of grocery store now and we are eating lot healthier cause of the piggie
