Hello there,

To all who said that Baytril in the water was a bad idea, you were right. It seemed to help for a while, but then last night she took a turn for the worse. All of a sudden her breathing got really bad, and she was seized up. I drove her straight down to the emergency room. She got a shot of Baytril, vitamin C, and I had her hospitalized over night in an oxygen tent for a total of $250. Io had peunomnia. She didn't make to the next day, she died in my hands that morning.

There is no need to be mean about me going to an incompetent vet, I thought that I was doing good. I have suffered enough, with the loss of little Io, and even my husband has.

Now I fear for my other piggie. He has never shown a single symptom, but he seems quite depressed over the loss of Io. The vetrinarian (a specialist) said that unless he was showing some sort of sign he was sick then I don't have to worry.

My poor baby. I am going to Petco when the general manager comes back and make a rucus about their poor care of piggies.

Once Monty has been under observation for a month I am going to be looking for another friend for him. Hopefully this time I will be able to rescue, but I am not driving from shelter to shelter looking for a piggie like last time.

*sigh* I really miss my little girl.

Liz

I'm sorry, it's really tough losing a pig.

I'm sorry.

I'd weigh him daily and keep a close eye on him. It may be more than depression, but hopefully not.

There are many pigs on the private adoptions list. Many will drive them to you for a good home, but that's when you are ready. I hope your boy is ok.

This is why we advocate quarantine and not buying. Good luck.

I think he may be to big for my kitchen scale (he was 2.4 pounds when he was adopted, so at least I know a safe begining weight) so I will have to see if he will sit still for the people scale :). Maybe I will put a note up on the private list. Hopefully I can find a piggie that doesn't scare my pansy of a boy. :). I wouldn't even try to get another one, but he is really depressed on his own (I know this for sure, because he became very cheerful, active, and popcorny when Io was around, but was/is sluggish before and after Io was here.) But he never loses his apitite :). I am going to go read some Harry Potter to put it out of my mind.

One more thing - I have a small C&C cage (it was built to be a second story, but never used) that is 1x3 - would this be Ok as a temp for a quarentine place?

Liz

I'm very sorry for your loss. You did what you thought was right, and that's all that you could do. My heart goes out to you.

About the quarentine cage: Is there any way you can make it a 2 by 3? If not, then I'm sure that a 1 x 3 is fine as a temporary cage, as long as you give a couple of hours of floor time each day.

For a quarantine cage, I would say that's fine. I don't know too many people that have room for more than one large C&C cage.

My condolences on your loss of little Io. I know she captured your heart.

I'm sorry for your loss. That must have been terrible losing your friend that way.

A 1x3 cage will do for a quarentine cage if it's the best you can do. If you had an old petstore cage that would also work. Small cages come in handy at times as long as they aren't their permanant home.

Sorry about your loss. I can't imagine anyone here giving you a bad time over your vet care. You did the best you could with what is propbably all thats available. We don't have an exotic here in town and to drive an hour to get to one is not easy. I hope if you do get another friend you look at a rescue. Our new Applesauce is a rescue and she is working out great. I hope Monte is ok.

Thank you for all your support. At least I know that she is finaly in peace. Monty was such a good parent to her too - she had never had veggies at Petco (I am assuming by her confusion at them). Any time Monty ate fruit and veggies she would trounce over and try to eat the same piece that was in his mouth. After a while she began eating them on her own. Her last treat was a small slice of watermelon. *sniff* Ok, I am getting all teary eyed so I am gonna go. :) But thank you all. Monty has a check up appointment this next week.

Liz

Sorry for your loss. I know it is not easy to loose a pig. Please remember to not beat yourself up about what happened. You did the best that you were capable of. Just continue to educate yourself to help avoid future tragadies (sp?). :0)

I am sorry you lost Io. I know how difficult it is to lose a pig. If the best you can do is a 1x3 for a quarantine cage, it's ok. If possible, maybe you could stretch it out to a 2x2. That gives a bit more running room.
