I'm in the process of building piggy a home. I have the cage made using 9x9 wire storage cube, same as most people use but need advice on a waterproof floor lining. I can use coroplast but are there alternatives? Also do I need to build up the sides of the wire cage wall with a lining, as seen in many of the photos on here? I'm unsure if that is a safety feature so piggy doesn't forced his head through the holes, which I doubt he could do, or are the sides there just to stop mess from falling out of the cage. The waterproof barrier will be covered with fleece in the non-eating area

I will create a kitchen area so that will need a solid wall and I'm looking into a large plastic storage container with one side cut away that will fit snugly into the space allocated for an eating area and piggy's dish, water bottle and hay rack can be put in there. This should make it easier to clean, although I would need a floor covering to go over the plastic storage container. I'm thinking maybe a piece of carpet tile or just more fleece.

Any help/advice/suggestions would be appreciated.

The sides are to keep the pigs from flinging hay and poop out of the cage. Put them in. You'll be very glad you did.

If you use wood pellets in the kitchen, you won't need to put anything over it. You can use stove pellets if they don't have any accelerant added, or animal bedding pellets. Neither should have a strong pine odor. You'd have to throw the carpet tile away as there's no good way to clean it.

Anything that's waterproof will work in place of the coroplast. Shower curtains are good. Linoleum will work if you can get the corners sealed. Just make sure the pigs can't chew either of those. Most don't seem to make many dents in coroplast.

I do not use coroplast as it is too expensive. For our new 4'x4' cage I used cardboard boxes to make it to 5'x5' then taped it all together with duct tape and then covered it with a cheap tarp from Walmart and wrapped the cardboard like a present so the tape was on the bottom. I then just added towels and then fleece and it was done. Took some time to get it all right but it works so good I can clean it weekly and it is holding up great. I don't see a need for walls as my pigs are actually clean and a few stray poops or pieces of hay I find but just a little sweep and it's all gone.

I'll looking into that idea. I never considered using a tarp but I can pick up a small one for pennies and the cardboard is free from any shop

Just make sure the tarp is actually water proof, a lot of cheap tarps will leak. It's better to use a shower curtain
